Women's Basketball Hosts UNC Greensboro Monday Night (7:00 PM)
November 11, 2013 | Women's Basketball
Coach Rick Reeves' Runnin' Bulldogs (1-0) blew past Montreat, 86-46, in the season opener Friday night - using a balanced attack that saw four players score in double figures and nine different players score at least five points against the NAIA Cavaliers. Gardner-Webb used a 12-0 run to get things started from the tip, making 5-of-7 field goals to start the game.
Forward Jessica Heilig (Salisbury, N.C. / Salisbury HS) showed a more diverse floor game than in seasons' past, showing improved range on her jump shot and accuracy from close to mid-range as she scored a game-high 14 points. Gardner-Webb's perimeter shooting was strong early and remained solid until the final horn. The 'Dogs knocked down their first three 3-point baskets and finished by making a solid 10-of-23 from long range.
Heilig (2-of-3), Lana Doran (3-of-5), Jasmine Dale (2-of-5) and freshman wing Kiera Currie (2-of-6) each made multiple trifectas.
UNC Greensboro (0-1) holds a one-game edge in the series, winning the only matchup last November, 55-49, in Greensboro. The Spartans played a strong Florida State team tightly for 16 minutes in the season opener, trailing by just four points just before halftime. The Seminoles pulled away with a 22-0 run that spanned halftime to win 93-59.
Janae' Stevenson, a 6-foot-2 center, led UNC Greensboro with 12 points in Tallahassee.
Tuesday night's game will air live on WGWG-FM (88.3 / wgwg.org), with Jared Pankhurst calling the action. The Big South Network will also carry the action, with the league's outstanding video streaming platform now available - free of charge - on a wide range of operating systems and devices, including smart phones and tablets.
