GAME NOTES: Gardner-Webb Hosts Jacksonville (Fla.) Saturday In Home Opener

Gardner-Webb welcomes former Atlantic Sun Conference rival
Jacksonville to Paul Porter Arena to open the home portion of its
2013-2014 schedule ... The game will air live on WGWG-FM (88.3 /
wgwg.org), with Fabian Fuentes providing the call ... The game will
also be available via the Big South Network (bigsouthsports.com),
which is free this season for the first time and available to view
on a wide range of devices - including smartphones and tablets.
SERIES NOTES
Saturday will be the 13th meeting between the two schools in men's
basketball, but the first non-conference meeting ... Jacksonville
has won four-straight and holds a slight, 7-5, edge in the all-time
series ... GWU is 3-1 against the Dolphins when playing in Paul
Porter Arena ... Jacksonville won the last meeting, 89-80 in the
semifinals of the 2008 A-Sun Men's Basketball Tournament in
Nashville, Tenn.

A SHARED LEGEND
NBA Hall of Famer Artis Gilmore can claim both Gardner-Webb and
Jacksonville as an alma mater. The legendary center starred at
Gardner-Webb during its junior college era from 1967-1969, before
moving on to Jacksonville and addition stardom. Gilmore averaged
22.5 points and 16.9 rebounds per game during his two seasons in
Boiling Springs and went on to lead Jacksonville to the Final Four

SHORTHANDED THROUGH FIRST TWO
Gardner-Webb has been shorthanded in each of its first two games,
playing the majority of both games without standout guard Naji
Hibbert (6-5, 190, RSr.), a transfer from Texas A&M. Hibbert
went down with an injury at Xavier with 14:04 on the first half
clock and finished the first half at half speed before missing the
second half entirely. GWU held a 9-3 lead with Hibbert was injured.
Hibbert sat out the Furman game, and his availability for
Saturday's game against the Dolphins will be a game-time decision.
Hibbert was a top-60 recruit as a senior at famed DeMatha Catholic
in Hyattsville, Md., sharing a backcourt with Josh Selby (Kansas)
and current Duke point guard Quinn Cook. The sixth man on that
team? Current NBA rookie Victor Oladipo.
UP NEXT
Gardner-Webb will host NAIA member Allen (S.C.) University at 7:30
on Tuesday night in its final home game until December 4 against
Wofford. Tuesday's game will air live on WGWG-FM (88.3 / wgwg.org)
