Four Runnin' Bulldog Grapplers Post Multiple Wins at UVA Quad Meet

Charlottesville, Va. - The Gardner-Webb team wrestling went 1-2 overall at the UVA Quad Meet on Saturday afternoon at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, Va. The Runnin' Bulldogs suffered back-to-back losses to West Virginia and Virginia, before ending the day with a rout of Anderson (S.C.).
Four wrestlers in Robbie Golde, Austin Trott, Boyce Cornwell and Justin Kozera all posted two wins apiece on the day, while four other Runnin' Bulldogs earned a win in GWU's 40-9 victory over Anderson (S.C.)
In GWU's first dual of the day versus West Virginia, the Mountaineers took an early 4-0 lead and then held on to defeat the Runnin' Bulldogs 24-12.
After a major decision loss at 125 pounds, GWU's Golde put the Runnin' Bulldogs on the scoreboard with a 10-5 win over the Mountaineers' Daniel Suite at 133 pounds.
However, the next three bouts would go in favor of the Mountaineers until Trott ended that streak with a 4-3 decision over Ross Renzi at 165 pounds to put the score at 15-6 in favor of West Virginia.
West Virginia then put the match out of reach with a pin at 174 pounds and another win at 184 pounds to put the score at 24-6.
Despite the outcome being out of reach, GWU picked up back-to-back decisions at 197 pounds and 285 pounds to end the match on a high not. Cornwell held on for a 3-2 win at 197 pounds, while Kozera would do the same at the heavyweight position to put the final score at 24-12.
The Runnin' Bulldogs then faced off with the host Cavaliers in dual match action, in which the home team swept GWU to take the 43-0 win.
Gardner-Webb suffered back-to-back close losses at 125 and 133 pounds, before Virginia posted a major decision at 141, back-to-back pins at 149 and 157, and another major decision victory at 165 pounds.
Following a fall at 174 pounds, the Cavaliers finished the match out with a decision, a technical fall win and another decision to earn the shutout victory over the Runnin' Bulldogs.
The loss did not deter the Runnin' Bulldogs, as head coach Daniel Elliott and GWU regrouped to register eight wins out of the 10 bouts in the 40-9 route of Anderson (S.C.).
Sophomore Cortez Starkes opened up the third match of the day for GWU with a 15-6 major decision win over Cory Monteforte at 125 pounds, while Golde immediately followed with a pin at 1:05 at 133 pounds over Keenan Simmons to put the Runnin' Bulldogs on top early at 10-0.
Redshirt-freshman Ryan Mosley and sophomore Tyler Ziegler then earned two straight hard fought 12-7 decision and 13-4 decisions at 141 and 149 pounds to push GWU's match lead out to 17-0.
After an Anderson (S.C.) win at 157 pounds erased the GWU shutout, the Runnin' Bulldogs' Trott dominated in a 16-0 technical fall win over Stephen Wylie to give Gardner-Webb a 22-3 lead.
Gray Jones then recorded is first win of the season by way of a fall over Taylor Dorsett at 1:15 at 184 pounds, while both Cornwell and Kozera followed with forfeit wins at 197 and 285 pounds to give GWU the 40-9 win.
Gardner-Webb (1-2) will return to the mat for competition in one week, when the Runnin' Bulldogs will compete at the Hokie Open on Saturday, November 10th, in Blacksburg, Va.
