
Gardner-Webb Cross Country Teams Finish in 10th Place at 2013 Big South Championship Meet

Lexington, Va. - The Runnin' Bulldogs' men's and women's cross country teams each achieved 10th place team finishes on Saturday morning as both squads competed at 2013 Big South Cross Country Championships, hosted by VMI.
Gardner-Webb finished in 10th place in the women's team standings with a total of 302 points. Coastal Carolina took 1st place (56 points), using a 1-2 finish from Letitia Saayman and Kyla Van Graan to knock off Liberty (76 points).
The Runnin' Bulldogs were led in the women's 5K by freshman Jenna Ford (Wasilla, Alaska), who finished in 22nd place Saturday morning by crossing the finish line 19:27.09.
Sophomore Claire Cates was second-fastest for GWU on the day. The Hillsborough, N.C. native raced to a time of 21:26.94 (71st) on the 5K course Saturday morning.
Senior Katie Spiro (Sylva, N.C.) recorded a time of 22:00.29 (77th) on the hilly 5K route in Lexington on Saturday, good for third-fastest for Gardner-Webb.
GWU's top 6 also included senior Megan Frost (Crofton, Md.), who finished in 23:52.07 (86th), sophomore Kaycee Martin (Madison, Ala.), who achieved a time of 24:48.95 (90th), and senior Taylor Cook (Boone, N.C.), who raced to a time of 26:16.12 (93rd).
Gardner-Webb finished in 10th place in the men's team standings with a total of 329 points. Liberty captured 1st place (40 points), edging 2nd High Point (48 points).
In the men's 8K, senior Mike McClay (Lawrenceville, Ga.) led the way, crossing the finish line at 29:00.33 (59th). The veteran Runnin' Bulldog runner has paced Gardner-Webb in each meet of his four-year collegiate career to date.
Sophomore Josh Ceasar posted GWU's second fastest time on Saturday, achieving a 30:05.78 finish in the 8K event. The Bardstown, Ky. native has finished second among GWU runners in each of the past two meets.
Senior Drew Ford (Wasilla, Alaska) was next for Gardner-Webb, crossing the finish line at 31:01.25 (78th) on the 8K course. Fellow senior Justin Loy (Burrington, N.H.) represented GWU's No. 4 runner Saturday morning after finishing in 31:03.44 (80th).
Senior Trey Crook (Lexington, N.C.), freshman James Haynes (Charlotte, N.C.), and junior Nick Rogers (Monroe, Ga.) rounded out GWU's top 7, recording times of 31:42.91 (86th), 31:52.28 (87th), and 34:33.46 (91st), respectively.
