
Four Runnin' Bulldogs Capture Singles Wins at Winthrop Invitational

Rock Hill, S.C. - Gardner-Webb wrapped up its Fall competition at the November 1-3 Winthrop Invitational, as all four Runnin' Bulldogs who competed at the three-day invitational picked up a win in singles play.
In the Div3 Singles draw, sophomore Jonathan Walker battled his way to an opening round win over Wofford's Jamey Bower, climbing back after dropping the opening set to prevail by a score of 3-6, 6-1, 1-0 (8).
Walker found himself in another one set hole in his second round match versus Appalachian State's Eric Greene, by battled back again to force a tiebreak. Greene ultimately came out on top, edging Walker by a 3-6, 6-2, 10-8 margin.
Sophomore Benjamin Kaszás won in his opening round match in the Div1 Singles draw. The Budapest, Hungary native cruised in the opening set and held off charge from Nick Iannuzzi (UAB) to win by a 6-3, 7-5 margin.
In the second round, Presbyterian's Grayson Mills controlled a 6-2, 6-4 win over Kaszás, who ended his weekend with a 1-1 singles mark.
After dropping his opening round match in the Div1 Singles draw, junior Ernest Alberch (Torello, Spain) bounced back for a 6-3, 6-1 win over UAB's Luiz Pinto. Alberch fell in round two of the Div1 Singles Consolation draw against Kennesaw State's Simon Pritchard by a 6-3, 6-3 margin.
Freshman Nick Lofrumento (Cocoa Beach, Fla.) picked up a win in the Div3 Singles Consolation bracket, knocking off JD O'Brien of Winthrop 6-4, 6-0.
With the impressive showing at the Winthrop Invitational, Gardner-Webb concludes its Fall competition period and turns its attention toward preparing for its 2014 Spring slate. GWU men's tennis is scheduled to open the Spring season at Clemson on January 19th.
