GWU Sprints To 86-46 Win Over Montreat In Season Opener
November 09, 2013 | Women's Basketball
The Runnin' Bulldogs (1-0) jumped out to a 12-0 lead, making five of their first six shots, and never looked back. The lead ballooned to 50-28 at halftime, and a quick 11-0 spurt out of the locker room made the score 61-28 with 17:08 to play on an old-fashioned 3-point play by Olivia Parker.
A layup by Doreen Richardson with 11:53 to play pushed the lead into the 30-point range for good.
Heilig made a pair of 3-pointers, knocked down five field goals and pulled down five boards in just 15 minutes of action. She was joined in double figures by Lana Doran (11 points), Candace Brown (10 points) and Catrina Green (10 points, seven rebounds). Brown added six rebounds, four assists and two steals in an outstanding all-around performance.
Point guard Mayhana Dunovant finished with five points, seven assists and a pair of steals in just 18 minutes. No Gardner-Webb starter played 20 minutes in the game.
Freshman Kiera Currie added nine points and Jasmine Dale chipped in eight. Nine different players scored at least five points in the game. Gardner-Webb shot 58.1 percent in the opening half (18-of-31) and finished at 48.4 percent for the game - including a very strong 10-of-23 effort from 3-point range (43.5 percent).
Doran was the team's marksman Friday, knocking down 3-of-5 from long range. Currie (2-for-6) and Dale (2-for-5) - along with Heilig - each hit multiple 3-pointers.
Gardner-Webb dominated the glass as expected, 45-28, forced 29 turnovers and limited the Cavaliers (0-1) to just 34.1 percent from the floor (16.7 percent from 3-point range).
Montreat got a team-high six points from Shayna Johnson off the bench. Johnson added three rebounds and was a perfect 3-of-3 from the floor. Hannah Kolbeck, Xandi Gellman and Kaitlyn Clontz each scored five points for the Cavs.
Gardner-Webb will be back in action at Paul Porter Arena on Monday night, hosting UNC Greensboro at 7:00 pm in another non-conference tilt - the second of four consecutive home games.
That game will air live on WGWG-FM (88.3 / wgwg.org) and the Big South Network (bigsouthsports.com), with Jared Pankhurst calling the action.
