GAME NOTES: Gardner-Webb Women Travel To Wright State Invitational
December 20, 2013 | Women's Basketball
THE
TOURNAMENT
Gardner-Webb travels to the 2013 Wright State Invitational on Friday and Saturday, battling the hosts at 7:00 pm on Friday night and playing either Lipscomb or Bradley on Saturday afternoon. Should GWU win Friday, it would play the winner of Lipscomb/Bradley at 4:30. A loss would mean playing at 2:00 against the loser of the Lipscomb/Bradley contest. The Horizon League Network will air Friday night's matchup.
SERIES NOTES
Gardner-Webb has never played Wright State or Bradley in women's basketball ... GWU is 8-6 all-time against Lipscomb, with many of those meetings coming during Gardner-Webb's time in the Atlantic Sun Conference (2002-2008).
THE DOUBLE-DOUBLE DIVA
Center Catrina Green (6-2, Sr.) has made her mark again in 2013-2014 so far, averaging 15.2 points and 10.7 rebounds per game - with four double-doubles to her credit in nine games. She was named Big South Conference Player of the Week after scoring 18 points, pulling down 17 rebounds and blocking three shots in the win over Wofford. For her career, the Greensboro, N.C., native is averaging a near double-double through 102 games (9.3 ppg, 7.7 rpg). Green has 26 career double-doubles in four seasons at Gardner-Webb. She has scored 949 career points, pulled down 785 career rebounds and has blocked 133 shots. The preseason All-Big South Conference selection has placed herself squarely in the discussion for 2014 Big South Conference Player of the Year accolades.
POINT GUARD PUZZLE
Gardner-Webb played its last game without its top two point guards, as Mayhana Dunovant and Tierra Huntsman each sat out with sprains. Both will hopefully be available for this weekend's action. In their absence, GWU turned to versatile wing Candace Brown and sharpshooting two-guard Jasmine Dale to handle the basketball. The result? An 11-point win over Wofford.
THE COMFORTS OF HOME
Gardner-Webb has posted a 5-0 record in Paul Porter Arena this season, winning games by an average of 18.8 points per game - and winning four the five by at least four possessions. Four of the five home wins have come against NCAA Division I opponents.
SHOOT THE ROCK
Behind center Catrina Green (10.7 rpg) and forward Olivia Parker (6.8 rpg), Gardner-Webb has controlled the backboards for much of the season - outrebounding opponents by an average of 5.7 boards per game. Green (four double-doubles) and Parker (two double-doubles) have gone for double-doubles twice in the same game so far in 2013-2014.
OHIO NATIVE
Freshman forward Christina McQueen (Findlay, Ohio) is the lone player on Gardner-Webb's roster from the Buckeye State. McQueen starred at Findlay High, and has shot a solid 57.1 percent for GWU this season (2.2 ppg, 7 blocks).
