December 21, 2013 | Women's Basketball
DAYTON, Ohio - Catrina Green scored 20 points and had eight rebounds, and Jessica Heilig added 16 for Gardner-Webb, but the Runnin' Bulldogs fell, 90-77, to Wright State Friday night on the road.
The host Raiders (9-3) knocked down 13 3-pointers and pulled away late in the second half after Gardner-Webb trimmed a 10-point halftime deficit to just four points with an early second-half run.
The Runnin' Bulldogs (6-4) fell behind by 12 in the first minute of the second half, but responded with an 15-6 run to trail just 51-48 on a jumper by Olivia Parker with 14:55 left in the game. Catrina Green trimmed the lead to 53-50 two possessions later with a jump shot inside, but Wright State went on a 16-4 spurt to extend its lead to 15 points over the next four minutes.
Gardner-Webb consistently exploited the Raiders' interior defense, but would get no closer than 10 points the rest of the way. GWU's inside effort resulted in 55.4 percent shooting for the game - including 60.0 percent in the second half.
In addition to Green and Heilig, Gardner-Webb got 13 points and 11 boards from Parker and nine points each from Candace Brown and Kiera Currie.
GWU held a sizable edge on the glass (49-26), outscored Wright State 52-32 in the paint and had a 19-2 edge in second-chance scoring. The Runnin' Bulldogs did have 26 turnovers, playing their second game in a row without a true point guard on the floor due to injuries. Wright State converted those miscues into a 26-5 edge in points off of turnovers.
Wright State knocked down 13-of-33 from long range in the game, getting a game-high 29 points from Kim Demmings and 20 from Ivory James - as that pair combined to hit nine treys.
Gardner-Webb will play Lipscomb at 2:00 Saturday afternoon in the consolation round. The Bison lost to Bradley, 87-85, in the opening game of Friday's doubleheader. Wright State will host Bradley in the title game at 4:30 pm.
