
Runnin' Bulldogs Fall to Lipscomb, 86-68, Saturday Afternoon at Wright State Invitational

DAYTON, Ohio - Jasmine Dale scored 19 points, and both Catrina Green (17 pts., 14 reb.) and Jessica Heilig (12 pts., 10 reb.) added double-doubles, but Lipscomb sprinted away in the 2nd half as Gardner-Webb fell 86-68 Saturday afternoon in its second game at the Wright State Invitational.
The Runnin' Bulldogs (6-5) led 41-39 at halftime, but saw the Bison (3-7) open the 2nd half with a 10-0 run to take control of the game.
A layup by Green with 14:08 left to play got GWU within 5 at 53-48, but three-pointers from Sara Bliss and Danay Fothergill sparked an 8-0 Lipscomb run gave the Bison the lead at 61-48 at the 12:39 mark.
Gardner-Webb was unable to get the game within single digits the rest of the way, and Lipscomb pulled away to lead 83-61 with 2:57 left in the game off of an Ashley Southern jumper.
Cold-shooting, particularly in the 2nd half, by the Runnin' Bulldogs enabled Lipscomb to pull away after halftime. GWU finished the game shooting 24-68 (35%).
The Bison shot 30-71 (42.3%), including 9-23 (39.1%) from 3-point range, and turned the ball over just 7 times, compared to 18 turnovers for Gardner-Webb.
Early in the 1st half, Southern's jumper with 16:55 left gave Lipscomb the 10-5 lead. Heilig hit two free throws made it an 8-3 push for GWU to tie the score at 13-13 at the 14:09 mark.
A pair of free throws from Dale made it 24-22 with 8:31 remaining in the 1st half, giving Gardner-Webb its first advantage since it led 2-0 in the first minute of the game. Doreen Richardson knocked down a jumper with 6:16 left to regain GWU's lead, 29-28, after a pair of Bliss free throws.
GWU closed the 1st half on a 10-2 run, capped by a jumper by Heilig with :04 before halftime, before Lipscomb took control out of the break.
Gardner-Webb got 6 points, 2 assists, and 9 rebounds from Candace Brown on Saturday despite a tough shooting day (2-12) for the sophomore. Freshman Kiera Currie chipped in 7 points (1-2 3PT) 2 assists, 2 rebounds, and 2 steals.
The Runnin' Bulldogs continued their strong rebounding, hitting the boards for 52 rebounds Saturday. Lipscomb pulled down 38 boards in the game.
GWU's top rebounder, Green, earned a spot on the All-Tournament team. Catrina Green had a combined 37 points and 22 rebounds in two games at the Wright State Invitational.
Gardner-Webb returns to action on Saturday, December 28 to take on Big South foe UNC Asheville on the road. The game in Asheville, N.C. is scheduled for a 2:00 p.m. tip-off.
