
Gardner-Webb's Kaszas and Zverkov Earn Big South Weekly Honors

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (BigSouthSports.com) - Gardner-Webb's Benjamin Kaszás (Budapest, Hungary) has been selected as the Big South Conference Choice Hotels Men's Tennis Player of the Week, while teammate Nikita Zverkov (Moscow, Russia) has been named The Crons Brand Freshman of the Week for matches played Feb. 11-17, it was announced today by the League office.
Kaszás won all four of his matches, helping the Runnin'
Bulldogs to a 2-0 record last week. In Thursday's match against
Wofford, he faced Drew Superstein at the No. 2 position and won
6-4, 6-7, 6-3. Kaszás also teamed up with Brendan Dempsey for an 8-5 win at No. 3 doubles. In
Gardner-Webb's 7-0 win against Brevard, he won the No. 2 spot in
straight sets (6-1, 6-0). He once again partnered with Dempsey to
down Rory Northam and Richie Liell, 8-3. This marks Kaszás'
first Player of the Week honor this season.
Zverkov went 4-0 in both singles and doubles matches last week. He
downed Wofford's David Sklar, 6-3, 4-6, 6-3, at No. 6 and bested
Rory Northam of Brevard, 6-1, 6-2, at No. 3. Zverkov partnered with
Ernest Alberch at No. 2 doubles, and the pair
defeated Wofford's Parks Thompson and Graham Duncan, 8-7, and
Brevard's Stefano Giovanolli and David Taggart, 8-5. This is
Zverkov's first nod for Freshman of the Week this season.
The pair of freshmen lead Gardner-Webb in a home match against
Charlotte on Wednesday, February 20 at 2:30 p.m. On Saturday, the
Runnin' Bulldogs travel for a road match against Coastal Carolina
in GWU's 2013 Big South opener.
