Richmond, Va. - Freshman Austin Trott's five wins and fifth-place finish at 165 pounds highlighted a group of strong performances of a number Gardner-Webb wrestlers on Sunday at the 2013 National Collegiate Open held in the Arthur Ashe Center in Richmond, Va.
Behind Trott's five victories was Ryan Mosley and Justin Kozera with four wins apiece and Boyce Cornwell with two victories overall.
Trott (5-2) opened up the day at 165 pounds with a pin at 1:08 over Michael Logan of VMI in the first round and then scored a pin at 4:16 over Ryan Fox of N.C. State in the second round to advance to the quarterfinals.
After a major decision loss to Jackson Morse of Illinois, who eventually would finish in third-place overall, in the quarterfinals, Trott would bounce back with a 17-0 technical fall win over Ryan Quinn of Central Michigan and a fall at 4:11 over Frank Affronti of Hofstra to move into the semifinals of the consolation bracket.
In the semifinals, Trott suffered a pin at 1:03 to Kevin Hartnett of Bloomsburg to fall into the fifth-place bout where he easily defeated Ryan Forrest of George Mason with a 19-3 technical fall win to claim fifth-place overall.
Mosley (4-2) recorded a pin at 1:43 over RJ de George of Maryland in the first round at 141 pounds, but got bounced to the consolation bracket with a 6-1 second round loss to Shyheim Brown of Maryland.
The freshman then swept through the consolation bracket, registering a 10-1 major decision win over Nicholas Maselli of Princeton, a 4-3 decision over Will Switzer of Lehigh and an injury default victory over Shane Arechiga of Maryland to advance to the quarterfinals where he fell on a late pin at 9:00 to Austin Woods of Chattanooga to end his day.
Also posting four wins on the day was Kozera (4-2) at the heavyweight class, as the redshirt-sophomore earned a 3-1 first round win over Zeal McGrew of Hofstra, but suffered a fall at 4:04 to Nick Gwiazdowski of N.C. State in the second round to fall into the consolation bracket.
In the consolations, like Mosley, Kozera recorded three straight wins in dominant fashion, a pin at 1:01 over Gerald Johnson of The Citadel, a fall at 4:30 over Jordan Marrero of Kent State and then a 12-1 major decision against Dan Garwood of Virginia Tech, to advance into the quarterfinals before falling to Mimmo Itle of Kent State 7-3.
Cornwell (2-2) also tallied multiple wins on the day, as the freshman netted a 3-1 first round win over Darren Hawkins of Virginia Tech before losing to Nick Whitenburg of Eastern Michigan by a technical fall in the second round.
In the consolation bracket at 197 pounds, Cornwell recorded his own technical fall victory, 18-2, over Cameron King of Virginia, and then saw his day come to an end by way of a pin at 6:25 by Zach Diekel of Lehigh.
At 157 pounds, Kyle Ash (1-2) posted a first round 8-2 win over Cody Copeland of Lock Haven, yet dropped his next two bouts, a 4-1 loss to Anthony Perrotti of Rutgers and an 8-4 defeat to Dylan Cottrell of Appalachian State, to end his day at 1-2 overall.
Alex White (125 pounds), Matt Kowalski (165 pounds), Joseph Evans (165 pounds) and Zach Bennett (184 pounds) all went 0-2 on the day at their respective weight classes.
Gardner-Webb will now set its sights on the 2013 Southern Conference Wrestling Championships, which will be hosted by VMI in Lexington, Va. on Saturday, March 9th.
