Alex Young to Compete in Virginia Tech Final Qualifier with NCAA Championships Bid on the Line

Boiling Springs, N.C. - Freshman thrower Alex Young will represent Gardner-Webb track & field at the Virginia Tech Final Qualifier on Saturday, March 2.
Young (LaVergne, Tenn.), who achieved a distance of 20.72 m to win the weight throw at last weekend's Big South Indoor Championships, currently owns an NCAA ranking of 16th entering this weekend, the last chance for athletes to qualify for 2012-13 NCAA Indoor Championships (March 8-9). The top 16 competitors in the weight throw qualify for the Championship meet.
The freshman would be the first to qualify for NCAA Indoor Championships in the weight throw event and only the second overall (Elliot Haynie, 10th pole vault, 2008) to compete at the Championship meet in program history
On Saturday, Young will look to add another accomplishment to what has already been a remarkable Indoor season for the first year Runnin' Bulldog. Young became a Big South champion in the weight throw (20.72 m) in his first collegiate Conference meet, setting a school record in the process. A two-time All-Big South recipient at this year's Indoor Championships, Young also set Gardner-Webb's all-time record in the men's shot put, placing second in the event with a distance of 16.52 m.
Young helped Gardner-Webb's men's track & field squad improve on its seventh place team finish from a year ago and achieve a fourth place team finish at 2012-13 Big South Indoor Championships last weekend.
According to the results of last season's NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships, Young's 20.72 m in the weight throw would have placed ninth in the event. The Top 8 out of the field of 16 competitors score at NCAA Championships.
Young is scheduled to throw both the weight throw and shot put events on Saturday in Blacksburg, Va.
