Boiling Springs, N.C. - Gardner-Webb's women's tennis team found
itself trailing after doubles play, and a Runnin' Bulldogs squad
playing its fourth match of the week ran out of steam, falling to
the reigning South Conference Champion UNC Greensboro Spartans,
7-0, on Saturday afternoon at the Webb Tennis Complex.
GWU (4-7, 0-2 Big South) got a No. 1 doubles win from Jenny Lunde and Erica White, who teamed up to rally from an early
deficit en route to an 8-7(6) win over the Spartans' tandem Annette
Rio/Kayla Gammie.
The doubles win from Lunde/White marks their seventh of the
season.
UNC Greensboro (7-4, 4-0 SoCon), winners of four straight coming
into Saturday afternoon's contest, took control of the match by
winning the opening doubles point. No. 2 doubles belonged to the
Spartans, as the duo of Alex Whitehead/Stephanie Falcon took an 8-4 win, and
UNC Greensboro won No. 3 doubles by default to post a 1-0 lead
early in the match.
The Runnin' Bulldogs lost tough matches at all five singles
positions in which they fielded a player. Freshman Valeria Popko
(St. Petersburg, Russia) battled throughout her three-set match at
No. 4 singles, but was unable to hold off Gammie in a tough 4-6,
6-3, 7-5 defeat.
Sophomore Yasmin Doost (Bray, Maidenhead, England) played
evenly with Rios at No. 2, but was unable to capitalize late in
either set, falling 7-5, 7-5. At No. 5, freshman Rokia Sacko (Montreal, Canada) suffered a 7-5, 6-3
defeat at the hands of Soumeya Anane, as did Lunde at No. 3
singles, who dropped a 7-5, 6-3 match against Falcon.
UNC Greensboro, who won at No. 6 singles by default, got a win
from Whitehead at the No. 1 singles position to round out the
scoring.
The Runnin' Bulldogs will look to bounce back on Monday, March
18 against Campbell. Monday's match versus the Fighting Camels,
GWU's Big South home opener, is scheduled for a 2:30 p.m. start
time.
