
GWU's Piftor and Zverkov Awarded Big South Weekly Honors

Charlotte, N.C. (BigSouthSports.com) - Gardner-Webb senior Roman Piftor (Tashkent, Uzbekistan) has been selected as the Big South Conference Choice Hotels Men's Tennis Player of the Week, while teammate Nikita Zverkov (Moscow, Russia) has been named The Crons Brand Freshman of the Week for matches played March 11-17, it was announced today by the League office.
Piftor went 2-0 at No. 3 singles last week, helping the Runnin' Bulldogs defeat Texas-Pan American and Longwood. In Friday's match against the Broncos, Piftor outlasted Chetan Panditi, 6-7 (5), 6-2, 6-2 for Gardner-Webb's match-clinching point. He concluded his week with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Longwood's Edward Becker. This marks Piftor's first Player of the Week honor this season.
Zverkov went undefeated in both singles and doubles play last week. In the match against Texan-Pan American, he teamed up with Ernest Alberch at No. 1 doubles for an 8-5 win. Against Longwood, Zverkov once again partnered with Alberch for an 8-5 victory at No. 2 doubles. He then won at the No. 6 spot, defeating Justin Higgs 7-6 (3), 2-6, 6-4. This is Zverkov's second Freshman of the Week honor this season.
Gardner-Webb continues its current four -match homestand today with a match versus Big South rival Campbell at 2:30 p.m.
