
Men's Golf to Compete at the 44th Annual Furman Intercollegiate This Weekend

Boiling Springs, N.C. - The Gardner-Webb men's golf team will continue its 2013 spring season this weekend, as the Runnin' Bulldogs will be one of 21 teams to compete at the 44th Annual Furman Intercollegiate on March 22-24th in Greenville, S.C.
The Furman Intercollegiate will take place at the par-72, 6,994-yard Furman University Golf Club on the campus of Furman University in Greenville, S.C.
Gardner-Webb will use the same lineup that it used in its previous two spring events this season in senior Daniel Kim, redshirt-junior Daley Byles, junior Steven Jones, sophomore Matt Yelverton and freshman Elki Kow.
Kim, Jones and Byles have all paced the Runnin' Bulldogs in each of Gardner-Webb's three spring events on the season, while Kim has posted two top-15 finishes, including a sixth-place finish at the Davidson College Invitational back on March 4-5.
As a team, the Runnin' Bulldogs are coming off a seventh-place finish at the 2013 General Hackler Championship in Murrells Inlet, S.C. back on March 11-12.
This year's 21-team field includes the host Paladins, Akron, Charleston Southern, Chattanooga, Dartmouth, East Tennessee State, Francis Marion, Gardner-Webb, Georgia State, Iowa State, Marshall, North Florida, Presbyterian, Purdue, Samford, Temple, Troy, Virginia Tech, Western Carolina, Winthrop and Wofford.
Three of the 21 teams are ranked among the top-50 teams in the nation and eight are among the top-100 teams in this week's GolfWeek/Sagarin Rankings, led by No. 15 North Florida. The Ospreys' Kevin Phelan in ranked No. 6 in the country and teammate MJ Maguire is ranked No. 35, while Iowa State's Scott Fernandez enters the week at No. 24.
The Furman University Golf Course was designed by Richard K. Webel of Long Island, N.Y., and Walter Cosby, superintendent of grounds and greens at the Greenbriar Hotel and Golf Resort.
Since the late 1970s, the course has been the site of two outstanding college tournaments, the Furman Intercollegiate and the Lady Paladin Invitational. In addition, the course hosts a number of local and state tournaments.
Through the years, a number of familiar names have played the course and participated in the Furman Intercollegiate. Past winners include Curtis Strange, Jay Haas, Mark Calcavecchia, Billy Andrade, Matt Kuchar and Furman's own Brad Faxon. LPGA stars Betsy King, Beth Daniel, Sherri Turner and Dottie Pepper all played their collegiate golf on the course as members of the Furman women's golf team.
Round one of the 54-hole tournament tees off on Friday morning at 8 a.m. with second round play slated for Saturday and final round action scheduled to begin on Sunday morning.
