March 20, 2013 | Men's Tennis
Boiling Springs, N.C. - Gardner-Webb's men's tennis team fell victim to a streaking Campbell team on Tuesday, suffering a 7-0 loss versus the Fighting Camels at the Webb Tennis Complex.
Tuesday's defeat marks the first home loss of the season for the Runnin' Bulldogs.
The match started with close contests at all three doubles positions, the outcome of the opening point being decided by a marathon match at No. 3. First, Gardner-Webb was able to get a win at the No. 2 doubles slot from the combined efforts of Nikita Zverkov and Ernest Alberch, who won 8-5 over Campbell's Josep Baro/David Clavera.
A win from No. 1 doubles tandem Fernando Guillen/Adrien Rossingnon by the Fighting Camels, who narrowly outlasted GWU's Matthew Parker/Benjamin Kaszás, 8-6, meant that the doubles point would come down to a tight match at No. 3. Campbell would clinch behind a 9-7 win from Steven Billington/Ondrej Kralik, forging a 1-0 lead over the Runnin' Bullldogs heading into singles play.
The Fighting Camels' momentum carried over into singles play, where the visitors would sweep the six singles spots to come away with the road victory. Baro knocked off Parker at No. 5 singles 6-1, 6-3, Rossington dispatched Roman Piftor 6-3, 6-0 at No. 2 singles, and Clavera knocked off Alberch at No. 4 singles to seal the match.
The Runnin' Bulldogs continued to fight with the match still in hand, taking the remaining singles matches at the No. 1, 3, and 6 singles spots to three sets. Adam Knutsson-Sundblad, Benjamin Kaszás, and Brendan Dempsey, fell in tough matches in those three matches, respectively.
GWU will stay in Big South play for a home match this weekend, as the Runnin' Bulldogs welcome Liberty to the Webb Tennis Complex for an 11:00 a.m. match on Saturday, March 23.
