
Kim and Yelverton Pace the Runnin' Bulldogs at the Furman Intercollegiate

Greenville, S.C. - Gardner-Webb golfers Daniel Kim and Matt Yelverton each posted a round of 71, -1 under par, over the three-day event to pace the Runnin' Bulldogs to a ninth-place team finish at the 44th Annual Furman Intercollegiate held at the par-72, 6,994-yard Furman University Golf Club in Greenville, S.C.
Gardner-Webb as a team posted combined team scores of 294, 296 and 296 to finish the three-day and three-round event with a final team score of 886, +22, good enough to place the Runnin' Bulldogs in ninth-place overall out of the 21 teams in the field.
Kim carded a low round 71, -1 under par, on Friday and then followed with back-to-back rounds of 74, +2, over the weekend to finish in a tie at 21st-place with a combined three-day score of 219, +3. Kim carded a team-high 10 birdies over the 54-hole event, posting four apiece over the first two rounds of play.
Finishing only one stroke behind Kim was Yelverton, as the sophomore posted rounds of 73 and 76 on the first two days, then registered a team-low 71, -1 under par on a rainy third round on Sunday afternoon to finish with a three-round combined score of 220, +4, good enough for a 24th-place finish. Yelverton, who had nine birdies overall for the event, carded four birdies on Sunday.
Redshirt-junior Daley Byles bounced back from a first round 81 on Friday to turn in rounds of 73 and 74 on Saturday and Sunday to finish in a tie for 65th-place with his tournament score of 228, +12. Byles totaled eight birdies over the three-day event.
Rounding out the field for the Runnin' Bulldogs was freshman Elki Kow and junior Steven Jones, who both recorded final three-round combined scores of 231, +15, to finish in a tie at 76th-place overall. Kow, who had an eagle on hole number six on Saturday, shot rounds of 76, 73 and 82 overall, while Jones tallied rounds of 74, 80 and 77 to make up his final score.
Virginia Tech earned the first-place team win with a combined score of 843, -21 under par, finishing 19 strokes ahead of No. 17 North Florida who finished in second with a three-round combined team score of 862, -2 under par.
The ninth-place finish put GWU ahead of fellow Big South Conference members Winthrop (T-11th), Charleston Southern (13th), Presbyterian (15th), as well as Southern Conference members Furman (T-16th) and Wofford (18th).
The men's golf team will return to action next weekend, as the Runnin' Bulldog golfers will take part in the Keith Hills Spring Intercollegiate hosted by the Campbell Fighting Camels in Buies Creek, N.C.
