GWU Women's Golf Takes Ninth at the Rain Shortened Low Country Intercollegiate

Hilton Head, S.C. - In what has become a common theme this spring season for the Gardner-Webb women's golf team, the Runnin' Bulldogs had its two-day tournament this week shortened to one round of play due to rain, as GWU took ninth-place overall at the Low Country Intercollegiate hosted by Wofford College at the par-72, 2,991-yards South Course at the Moss Creek Golf Club in Hilton Head, S.C.
Since heavy rainfall and inclement weather washed out the first round of play on Sunday, the 16-team field played a one-day, 18-hole event on Monday. The Runnin' Bulldogs totaled a combined team score of 342, +54, to finish in ninth-place overall.
GWU senior Meghan Allum was the top performer for the Runnin' Bulldogs for the second straight tournament on Monday, as she carded a GWU low round 81, +9, to finish in a tie for fourth-place overall.
Fellow seniors Hannah Hellyer and Sammy Vass turned in rounds of 85, +13, and 86, +14, respectively, to finish in ties at 27th and 30th overall on the individual leaderboard.
Junior Pilar Morgan finished the day in a tie at 53rd-place overall with her one round score of 90, +18, while senior Lauren Smith withdrew from the event.
Playing as an individual, freshman Mary Katherine Donovan recorded a round of 91, +19, to finish in a tie for 56th-place overall.
Western Carolina won the event, as the Catamounts shot a team score of 328, +40, to finish four strokes ahead of Princeton (332, +44) who took second-place and seven strokes in front of third-place Dartmouth (335, +47).
GWU's ninth-place finish was ahead of regional and conference foes Radford (10th), Presbyterian (11th) and USC Upstate (14th).
This is the third tournament this spring for the Runnin' Bulldogs that has been altered or shortened due to the weather.
Gardner-Webb will have one final event before the 2013 Big South Women's Golf Championships on April 14-16, as the lady golfers will compete at the Mimosa Hills Intercollegiate hosted by Appalachian State in Morganton, N.C. on April 1-2.
