
Gardner-Webb Drops Big South Match at Winthrop on Tuesday

Rock Hill, S.C. - The Runnin' Bulldogs picked up wins at No. 1 doubles as well as No. 1 singles, but were unable to overcome the depth of the Winthrop Eagles on Tuesday, falling by a 6-1 margin on the road.
GWU (5-9, 1-4 Big South) dropped its second straight match, having suffered a narrow home loss this past Saturday to Liberty.
Against Winthrop (8-9, 3-0 Big South), last season's Big South Tournament champions, the Runnin' Bulldogs got off to a fast start at No. 1 doubles, winning at at that position thanks to Erica White and Jenny Lunde. White and Lunde, who bested Portioli/Garcia 8-5 during doubles, improved to 10-2 on the year as a duo at the No. 1 spot.
After a win by default at No. 3 doubles, Cridland/Gunaysu got past GWU's Yasmin Doost/Rokia Sacko tandem, 8-4, to seal the doubles point and forge a 1-0 lead in the match entering singles play.
Winthrop got quick wins at No.'s 3 and 4 singles from Giovanna Portioli and Caitlin Cridland respectively to push their overall lead to 3-0. The Eagles No. 2 singles player, Alice Garcia, also won at No. 2 singles in a tough 6-3, 6-3 match against Doost.
White, a senior from Charleston, W.Va., picked up a singles win for the Runnin' Bulldogs at the No. 1 position, her team-leading eleventh of the season. White defeated the Eagles' Andressa Garcia 6-3, 6-2 to win her third straight singles match, all in Big South play.
Gardner-Webb stays in League play to play Campbell on Thursday, March 28. The Runnin' Bulldogs' home match versus the Fighting Camels, at the Webb Tennis Complex, is scheduled for a 1:30 p.m.
