Runnin' Buldogs Bow Out to No. 9 Longwood, 4-3, During Big South Tournament's First Round
April 17, 2013 | Women's Tennis
Rock Hill, S.C. - Gardner-Webb won three singles matches on Wednesday, but were unable to complete a comeback after a doubles deficit, seeing the 2013 season come to an end with a 4-3 loss to No. 9 Longwood during the first round of the Big South Championships.
GWU ends the season with an 8-13 overall record and a 3-7 Big South mark.
The Runnin' Bulldogs were faced with an uphill battle after doubles play left the team down 1-0. Jenny Lunde teamed with Erica White for the duo's 16th No. 1 doubles win of the season, defeating Pinyol/Shulman 8-3, but an 8-5 No. 2 win for the Lancers' Moomau/Allgurin and a No. 3 win for Longwood by default meant GWU would need four singles wins to advance.
After Longwood won No. 6 singles by default, Lunde (Oslo, Norway) won by retirement at the No. 3 spot to cut the Lancers lead in half.
White (Charleston, W.Va.) evened the match for GWU, holding down the No. 1 spot with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Marta Pinyol.
At No. 2 singles, Malin Allgurin moved Longwood within one point of clinching the match with a 6-4, 6-3 win.
The Runnin' Bulldogs answered with a win from freshman Rokia Sacko (Montreal, Canada), who outlasted Longwood's Hannah Hill at No. 5 singles by a 6-3, 6-4 margin to tie the team scoring at 3-3.
The match came down to No. 4 singles, where Sarah Moomau sealed the win for Longwood with a 6-4, 6-2 triumph.
Quarterfinal action of the Big South Women's Tennis Tournament starts at 8:00 a.m. on Thursday, April 18, when No. 1 Winthrop faces No. 9 Longwood.
