
Gardner-Webb Takes First-Place Overall at the 2013 Keith Hills Invitational

Buies Creek, N.C. - The Gardner-Webb men's golf team had all five players finish in the top-15 overall in the individual standings, as the Runnin' Bulldogs took first-place overall in the team standings at the 2013 Keith Hills Invitational hosted by Campbell University at the par-71, 6,609-yard golf course at the Keith Hills Country Club in Buies Creek, N.C.
Gardner-Webb as a team recorded rounds of 288, 286 and 284 to finish the two-day event in first-place overall with a combined score of 858, +6. The third round team score of 284, even par, was the lowest round by a single team in the tournament.
Leading the way for the Runnin' Bulldogs at the two-day event was sophomore Matt Yelverton, who carded rounds of 72, 71 and 69 to finish in a tie for second-place overall with a three-round combined score of 212, -1 under par. Yelverton, along with fellow teammate Steven Jones, led the Runnin' Bulldogs with a total of 39 pars over the 54-hole event, while also posting a 4.44, -5 under par, par-5 scoring average overall.
Also recording a top-five finish was senior Daniel Kim, who shot rounds of 72, 71 and 72 to finish with a combined score of 215, +2, to place in a tie at fifth-place overall. Over the two days of play, Kim carded 10 birdies and 35 pars, while also posting a tournament best 3.94, -2 under par, par-4 scoring average overall.
Freshman Elki Kow turned in his best overall performance for the Runnin' Bulldogs since joining the team in January, as the newcomer turned in rounds of 73, 71 and 73 to finish in a tie for seventh-place overall with his combined score of 217, +4. In his first top-10 finish as a Runnin' Bulldog, Kow was second overall in the tournament field with 11 birdies.
Both Jones and redshirt-junior Daley Byles, who finished out the competitors for the Runnin' Bulldogs' team, earned top-15 finishes overall. Jones, who registered rounds of 72, 73 and 74, finished in a tie for 12th-place overall with a three-round combined score of 219, +6, while Byles finished in a tie for 14th-place overall with his combined score of 220, +7, as he turned in rounds of 72, 78 and 70 over the three rounds of play.
Playing as individuals at the event, freshman Clement Kurniawan carded rounds of 69, 74 and 77 to finish with a combined score of 220, +7, good enough to place him in a tie at 14th-place overall, while senior Arron Price finished in a tie at 42nd-place overall with rounds of 72, 80 and 81 to comprise his combined three-round score of 233, +20.
As a team, Gardner-Webb led the tournament field with 40 birdies and 177 pars, while also posting one eagle for the event. GWU also recorded a tournament best 4.64, -16 under, par-5 scoring average over the 54-hole event as well.
The host institution in Campbell University took second-place overall with a team score of 863, +11, while James Madison rounded out the top-three with a score of 884, +32, to finish in third-place overall.
Gardner-Webb will return to the links in two weeks when the Runnin' Bulldogs will tee-off at the Coca-Cola Invitational hosted by Wofford College in Spartanburg, S.C. on April 15-16th.
