Trott earned All-American recognition with their seventh and
eighth-place finishes, respectively, at the 2013 ASICS (FILA)
Junior National Greco-Roman Championships on Friday, April 19th, at
the Las Vegas Convention Center in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Mosley highlighted the group with a seventh-place finish at 66
KG, while Trott took eighth-place overall at 74 KG and fellow
freshman Hunter
Gamble missed out on earning All-American status by one bout at
79 KG.
The one-day event, which was formerly named the FILA Junior
National Championships, has been in existence for the past 23 years
and is open to wrestlers ages 17-20. The top-eight wrestlers in
each weight class earn All-American honors.
After a first round bye at 66 KG or 145 pounds, Mosley recovered
from a second round loss to take seventh-place overall. Mosley
suffered a second round loss to Rylan Lubeck of Badger WC, who took
second-place overall, 3-0 and 1-0 to fall into the consolation
bracket where he went on to defeat Deven Donais of SMI 1-0 and 1-0
to post his first win of the day.
In the very next round, Mosley lost to Tom Keanu of Team SOCAL
in three periods 2-0, 0-2 and 1-0 to move into the seventh-place
bout where he defeated Anthony Valencia of Titan Mercury Wrestling
Club 4-1 and 8-0 to finish the day at 2-2 overall.
Like Mosley, at the 74 KG class or 163 pounds, Trott suffered a
2-0, 0-2 and 5-0 loss to Adam Fierro of Dave Schultz Elite, who
finished in fourth-place overall, in his second round match after
receiving a first round bye. In the consolation bracket, Trott
bounced back to defeat Sean O'Malley of the Terrapin Wrestling Club
2-0 and 4-1 to stay alive in the one-day event.
However, in the second round of the consolation bracket, Trott
was defeated by Logan Marcicki of Team Shamrock 0-7, 6-0 and 5-0
and pushed to the seventh-place bout where he was handed a 7-0 and
6-0 technical fall loss to Matthew Gray of the Bison Wrestling
Club. Trott finished the day at 1-3 overall and in eighth-place
overall at the 74 KG bracket.
At 79 KG or 174 pounds, fellow Gardner-Webb freshman Hunter
Gamble went 1-2 overall on the day. After falling to William
Baker of the Rocky Mountain Region, who would go on to take
first-place overall at 79 KG, in a tough contest 2-1, 0-1, and 2-0
in the first round, Gamble rebounded to defeat Corey Smith of the
Patriot Elite Wrestling Club 2-0 and 5-0 to move on to the second
round of the consolation bracket. There, however, Gamble would lose
to Lukas Basham of Basham Wrestling 7-0, 0-5 and 4-2 to end his day
at the 79 KG bracket.
GWU freshman Boyce
Cornwell, who competed at the 96 KG bracket or 211 pounds, was
handed back-to-back losses to see his day finish early at 0-2
overall. Cornwell was defeated 6-3 and 1-0 by Matthew Idelson of
NYAC-Harlem, who took fifth-place overall, in the first round and
then suffered a fall at 1:28 in the third period after splitting
the first two periods with scores of 0-1 and 1-0 to Matthew Meadows
of the Patriot Elite Wrestling Club in the first round of the
consolation bracket.
In Greco-Roman Wrestling, two wrestlers are scored for their
performance in three two-minute periods, which can be terminated
early by a pinfall. This style of wrestling forbids holds below the
waist, which is the major difference from freestyle wrestling.
Mosley, Trott, Gamble and Cornwell will all return to action
tomorrow afternoon, Saturday, April 20th, as the quartet will join
fellow Runnin' Bulldog freshman grappler Kyle
Ash at the 2013 ASICS (FILA) Junior Freestyle Nationals
Championships at the Las Vegas Convention Center in Las Vegas,
Nevada.
