Boiling Springs, N.C. - For the fifth straight season, the Gardner-Webb women's golf team wrapped up its year with a top-five team finish at the Big South Conference Women's Golf Championship Tournament to give the Runnin' Bulldogs and head coach Tee Burton a total of seven top-five team finishes throughout the 2012-13 season.
The 2012-13 season was capped off by senior Sammy Vass earning a spot on the 2013 Big South Conference All-Academic Team, while fellow graduating seniors Meghan Allum and Hannah Hellyer each posted a top-15 finish overall at the conference championship tournament for the third straight year.
As a team, GWU started off the 2012 fall season with a second-place finish at the Terrier Intercollegiate in early September, as freshman Mary Katherine Donovan took first-place overall with a two-round combined score of 143, -1 under par, in her first-ever intercollegiate event.
Gardner-Webb then won the team championship at the one-day Highlander Invitational on September 23rd, as four Runnin' Bulldog lady golfers placed in the top-10 individually overall for the event.
After a 10th-place team finish at the UNCG Starmount Forest Tournament to kick-off the month of October, the Runnin' Bulldogs bounced back to post back-to-back second-place team finishes at the Winthrop University Intercollegiate and the GWU versus HPU Duals.
The Runnin' Bulldogs then wrapped up its 2012 fall slate with an eighth-place team showing at the Fighting Camel Classic on October 22-23rd in Buies Creek, N.C.
The 2013 spring season was almost washed out, as the Runnin' Bulldogs saw its first three tournaments all shortened due to rain and inclement weather conditions.
Gardner-Webb opened up the spring slate with a fourth-place finish at the High Point University Classic on February 25th and then recorded a fifth-place team finish at the C&F Bank Intercollegiate on March 17-19th in Williamsburg, Va.
The veteran GWU squad then got in only one round of play at the Low Country Intercollegiate in Hilton Head, S.C. on March 24-25th, finishing in ninth-place overall at the rain-shortened event, before registering a seventh-place finish at the Mimosa Hills Intercollegiate in Morganton, N.C. on April 1-2nd.
At the 2013 Big South Conference Women's Golf Championship presented by Musco Sports Lighting, the Runnin' Bulldogs carded team rounds of 306, 310 and 301 to finish in fourth-place overall with a combined score of 917, +53.
Overall on the season, Allum paced the Runnin' Bulldogs with a team-best 77.05 stroke average on the year, less than one whole stroke ahead of fellow senior Lauren Smith who recorded a stroke average of 77.81 on the season.
Allum also led GWU with six top-10 finishes on the season, while Donovan recorded two first-place finishes overall at both the Terrier Intercollegiate and the GWU versus HPU Duals.
While the future looks bright for the Runnin' Bulldogs with returners Donovan, Pilar Morgan, Julia Henderson and Tessy Tuschen, as well as a solid 2013 signing class, Coach Burton will be losing a lot in the four seniors Allum, Hellyer, Smith and Vass who have all combined to play in close to 150 events for Gardner-Webb over the last four years.
