Akron, Ohio - Over the Memorial Day Weekend, the Gardner-Webb wrestling program had seven grapplers in Ryan Mosley, Kyle Ash, Tyler Ziegler, Boyce Cornwell, Cortez Starkes, Justin Kozera and Austin Trott take the mat at the 2013 ASICS University Freestyle Nationals held at the Louis and Freda Stile Athletic Field House at the University of Akron in Akron, Ohio.

GWU's Mosley, Ash and Ziegler led the way for the Runnin' Bulldogs with two wins apiece in their respective weight classes, while Cornwell and Starkes each posted one win apiece over the three-day event.

At 66 KG, Gardner-Webb's Mosley earned a first round bye in the championship bracket and then moved on to defeat Dario Gamino of Waldorf by way of an 11-0 technical fall win in the second round of competition.

In the third round of the championship bracket, Mosley was defeated by Nick Dardanes of the Minnesota Storm, 14-2, to fall into the wrestleback bracket at 66 KG where the Georgia native earned a 13-3 technical fall victory over Angelo Silvestro of the Finger Lakes Wrestling Club in the fourth round to move on to the fifth round of the consolation bracket were he suffered an 11-8 loss to Ryan Hunsberger of the Patriot Elite Wrestling Club to finish the tournament at 2-2 overall.

Like Mosley at 66 KG, Ash earned a first round by in the championship bracket and went 2-2 overall at the three-day event at 70 KG. After his first round bye, Ash upended Eric Nutter of the Pittsburgh Wrestling Club with a 16-9 win to advance to the third round of the championship bracket where he was edged by Tom Giaimo of the Minnesota Storm 6-5 to suffer his first loss of the event and get knocked into the consolation bracket.

In the wrestleback bracket, Ash posted a fourth round 12-1 technical fall over Matthew Huffstickler of the Patriot Elite Wrestling Club to continue on to the fifth round of the consolation bracket where he was defeated by Nick Tourville of Boston University 11-6.

At 63 KG, GWU's Ziegler registered a first round 11-0 technical fall victory over Jackson Timm of Bison Legend Wrestling Club to move on to the second round of the championship bracket where the Ohio native then suffered a 5-0 loss to John Meeks of Iowa State, who went on to finish seventh overall, to fall into the consolation bracket.

In the 63 KG consolation bracket, Ziegler recorded a 5-1 win over Joshua Shupe of the Minnesota Storm in the second round, before suffering a 10-3 loss to Josh Durham of Oklahoma in the third round of the wrestleback bracket to see his tournament end at 2-2 overall as well.

Gardner-Webb's Cornwell went 1-2 overall at the 96 KG bracket, as after the redshirt-freshman posted a 12-7 decision over Tyler Lyster of the Bison Legend Wrestling Club in the first round of the championship bracket, the 197 pounder suffered a pin at 1:04 to Appalachian State's Paul Weiss in the second round and then a 10-0 shutout defeat to Josh Manu of MO Valley Wrestling in the second round of the consolation bracket.

Starkes, who wrestled for the Green Machine Wrestling Club, also went 1-2 at the national event, as the Greenville, S.C. native suffered a first round 13-10 loss in the championship bracket to John Sparks of the Wolfpack Wrestling Club to fall into the consolation bracket at 55 KG.

In the wrestleback bracket, Starkes held on for a 9-7 decision over Jordan Bremer of the Minnesota Storm in the first round, before losing a heartbreaking 9-8 bout to Carl Deluca of UW-Oshkosh in the second round to see his tournament come to an end at 55 KG.

The Runnin' Bulldogs' Kozera, who competed at 120 KG over the three-day event, went 0-2 overall, as he suffered back-to-back technical fall losses to Nick Tavanello of Ohio State and Justin Grant of the Husky Wrestling Club, while fellow Runnin' Bulldog grappler Trott also went 0-2 with a 15-12 loss to Peyton Walsh of the Navy Mat Club and a fall at 2:06 to Ben Villaret of NYAC - Harlem at 74 KG.
