Second Half 49ers Comeback Downs Gardner-Webb in 2-1 Road Defeat Tuesday Night

Charlotte, N.C. - Second half goals from Charlotte's Sarah Ann Waugh and Sara Trexler eliminated a second half lead from the visiting Runnin' Bulldogs, as the 49ers came away with a 2-1 win in women's soccer action on Tuesday night.
Gardner-Webb (0-1-1) struck first, scoring in the 9th minute off a header from sophomore Whitley Bowman. Fellow sophomore Shelby Hooe (Mechanicsville, Va.) assisted on the goal off a corner kick, putting the ball into the box in good position for Bowman (Damascus, Md.) to score the first goal of the match as well as the first goal of her Runnin' Bulldog career.
The assist was also the first of Hooe's collegiate career thus far.
Charlotte put three shots on goal in the first half to pressure the GWU defense, but two saves from Amy Schmitt and timely defense from the Runnin' Bulldogs' backline kept the 49ers off the board in the first period.
Charlotte (3-0) countered with second half goals in the 51st and 74th minutes to capture the lead for good. Constant pressure from the 49ers paid off with goals from inside the box from both Waugh and Trexler to put GWU in a one-goal hole.
Frantic efforts from the Charlotte offense late in the match kept the ball on GWU's half of the field late. Meagan Reynolds found room enough to get a shot off in the 89th minute, but her attempt sailed high.
Offensively, GWU was led by Bowman's first goal of the season as well as Hooe's first assist early in the 2013 campaign. Reynolds was also active offensively, recording five shots (three on goal).
Charlotte was led by Trexler, who scored once on four shot attempts (three on goal), and Waugh (one goal, two shots).
Alex Kubrick picked up the win, tallying four saves over the course of the match. Schmitt took the loss for Gardner-Webb with five saves over two periods of play.
Gardner-Webb will look to rebound in two non-conference matches at the South Carolina State tournament in Orangeburg, S.C.. The Runnin' Bulldogs face the host Bulldogs on Friday (7:30 p.m.) and will face Francis Marion on Sunday (1:00 p.m.).
