Boiling Springs, N.C. - Gardner-Webb women's soccer team is set
to compete in the 2013 Bulldog/Sleep Inn Tournament, with games
scheduled for the Runnin' Bulldogs on Friday and Sunday in
Orangeburg, S.C.
GWU (0-1-1) will face the host South Carolina State Bulldogs
(2-1-0) on Friday, August 30 and will play Francis Marion
(0-1-0) in a neutral site game in Orangeburg on Sunday, September
1.
The Runnin' Bulldogs are coming off a narrow road defeat at the
hands of the Charlotte 49ers, who used two second-half goals to
overcome an early GWU goal by Whitley
Bowman (Damascus, Md.) to escape with a 2-1 home win over
Gardner-Webb.
Shelby
Hooe (Mechanicsville, Va.), who assisted on the goal to Bowman,
has helped jump start a Runnin' Bulldog offense that struggled to
produce in 2012, particularly early in the season. In addition to
her assist versus the 49ers, Hooe scored the equalizer in GWU's
season- and home-opening tie of North Florida.
Redshirt junior Meagan
Reynolds (Kings Mountain, N.C.) has also made an early impact
this season. Reynolds, who missed the 2012 season with an injury,
has contributed an assist as well as five shots on goal through two
matches this season.
Defensively, the Runnin' Bulldogs have been resilient despite
numbers issues early on. Junior goalkeeper Amy
Schmitt (Waxhaw, N.C.) has collected 13 saves through two
matches this season. GWU's backline defenders, including Haley
Ahrenholtz, Addison
Abee, and Brooke
Kelly, has been solid in limiting quality looks for the
opposition early.
GWU's first match of the tournament is scheduled for a 7:30 p.m.
start time on Friday. Following the match versus SCSU, the Runnin'
Bulldogs are slated to play at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday versus Francis
Marion.
