GWU Falls, 2-0, to Host South Carolina State in Opening Match of Tournament Play on Friday Night

Orangeburg, S.C. - South Carolina State scored in both the first and second halves, and Bulldog keeper Haley Austin pitched a shutout to hand the Runnin' Bulldogs a 2-0 defeat in Friday night's Bulldog/Sleep Inn Tournament.
GWU (0-2-1) failed to score for the first time this season, though it equaled South Carolina State's output in shots on goal (four apiece).
The host Bulldogs (3-1-0) earned a quality look on goal in the 35th minute when Janell Cash fired a shot off the dribble into the back of the net for her first goal of the season. With the goal, the Runnin' Bulldogs found themselves down 1-0 heading into the half.
South Carolina State held a slight 5-4 edge over Gardner-Webb in shots taken over the first period of play.
The Runnin' Bulldogs equaled its first half shot output in the second, pressuring SCSU's backline and keeper Haley Austin in attempt to net the equalizer.
Austin recorded four saves for the match as GWU was kept scoreless in the second half for the second straight match.
In the 72nd minute, South Carolina State tacked on a goal off one of its seven corner kicks on the night, when Kaitlyn O'Neill scored off the assist from Tori Papp. O'Neill's goal off the corner kick put the Runnin' Bulldogs in a late 2-0 hole on the road.
Austin and the South Carolina State defense would go on to keep GWU's offense from cutting into the two goal lead.
GWU was led offensively by sophomore forwards Ashley Carmean (Ashburn, Va.) and Shelby Hooe (Mechanicsville, Va.), who each finished the match with two shots taken (one on goal apiece).
Senior Ele Margelos (North Potomac, Md.) and freshman Braddick Price (Huntington, W.Va.) each recorded a shot on goal, and freshman Brandi Arey (Cary, N.C.) tallied two shots in the match.
Austin (3-1-0) took the win for South Carolina State, collecting four saves in the contest. Junior Amy Schmitt (0-2-1) took the loss, recording two saves Friday night.
The Runnin' Bulldogs will look to bounce back in its second match of the 2013 Bulldog/Sleep Inn Tournament (Orangeburg, S.C.). GWU faces Francis Marion on Sunday, September 1 at 1:00 p.m. in a neutral site game.
