Strong Third Round Pushes GWU to a Third-Place Finish at the Golfweek Program Challenge

Pawleys Island, S.C. - The Gardner-Webb men's golf team posted three sub par rounds on Tuesday morning to record a team score of 282, -6 under par, to finish in a tie for third-place overall at the 2013 Golfweek Program Challenge hosted by Golfweek Magazine at the True Blue Golf Resort in Pawleys Island, S.C.
Gardner-Webb improved its team score each day, posting rounds of 292, 289 and 282 to finish the three-day event with a team score of 863, -1 under par, and in a tie for third-place overall on the team leaderboard with Jacksonville State.
GWU's team round of 282 on Tuesday was the lowest team round on the day.
The Runnin' Bulldogs were led by sophomore Clement Kurniawan who posted a GWU low round of 68, -4 under par on Monday, and a 70, -2 under par, on Tuesday to go along with a first round 74, +2, to finish in seventh-place overall with a combined score of 212, -4 under par. Kurniawan carded 13 birdies over the three-round event.
Behind Kurniawan and also posting a top-15 finish were junior Matt Yelverton and senior Steven Jones. Yelverton carded rounds of 73, 72 and 70 to finish in 10th-place overall at 215, -1 under par, while Jones was consistent throughout the tournament with rounds of 73, 71 and 72 for an even par 216, to place in a tie for tied for 11th overall. Yelverton turned in eight birdies overall for the event, while Jones registered 10 birdies and one eagle.
Rounding out the scoring for GWU over the week was redshirt-senior Daley Byles and sophomore Elki Kow. Byles carded a round of 70, -2 under par, on Tuesday to finish with a three-round combined score of 225, +9, and in a tie at 44th-place, while Kow, who carded a GWU low round of 72, even par, on Sunday, finished the three-day event tied for 52nd-place overall with his score of 227, +11.
Both Byles and Kow posted seven birdies over the three rounds of play.
Akron took home the team championship with a final score of 856, -8 under par, while IUPUI (861, -3 under par) finished in second.
Western Carolina's J.T. Posten medaled, as he posted a first-place finish with rounds of 66, 69 and 70, to card a tournament low score of 205, -11 under par.
Gardner-Webb will return to the links this weekend, as the Runnin' Bulldogs will take part in the 2013 Tar Heel Intercollegiate hosted by the University of North Carolina on September 14-15th at the UNC Finley Golf Course in Chapel Hill, N.C.
