September 14, 2013 | Women's Soccer
Boiling Springs, N.C. - Sophomore forward Shelby Hooe contributed on three Gardner-Webb goals, and Tori James scored for the first time in her collegiate career to spark the Runnin' Bulldogs' 3-0 win over Chattanooga Friday night in women's soccer action.
Friday night's contest marked the second match of the 2013 Under Armour Border Classic hosted by Gardner-Webb University. South Carolina State and USC Upstate tied, 0-0, Friday afternoon.
GWU (2-3-1) saw its offense explode to post its highest offensive output since a 3-0 win at USC Upstate on September 11, 2012.
James (Fayetteville, Ga.) got the scoring started for the Runnin' Bulldogs in the 22nd minute, rising up inside the box to get a head on Hooe's corner kick and bury it into the left side of the goal for her first goal at GWU.
GWU was able to play off the momentum created by James' goal and push its lead to 2-0 when Hooe (Mechanicsville, Va.) received a well-placed pass from freshman Brandi Arey (Huntersville, N.C.). Hooe fired a shot from the top of the 18 yard box into the back of the net in the upper right corner of the goal to push GWU's lead to 2-0.
Hooe's fourth goal of the season put the Runnin' Bulldogs on top 2-0 going into halftime.
Chattanooga (2-3) pushed the ball forward early in the second half, but a stingy GWU defense negated threatening Moc shot attempts and kept Gardner-Webb's offense on the attack.
That strategy paid off in the 64th minute when Hooe scored for the second time on the night, widening GWU's lead to 3-0 when she found the back of the net off a free kick assist from fellow sophomore Brooke Kelly (Lawrenceville, Ga.).
Through six matches in 2013, Hooe has already set a career high in goals scored (5) as well as in assists (3) and points (13) for a season in this her second year as a Runnin' Bulldog.
Gardner-Webb's defense would maintain the momentum, as defenders Addison Abee, Whitley Bowman, Haley Ahrenholtz, and Kelly were poised throughout the contest in preventing the Mocs from pressuring goalkeeper Amy Schmitt.
Schmitt (Waxhaw, N.C.) picked up the win for the Runnin' Bulldogs, tallying four saves in posting her first shutout on the year. Chattanooga's Taylor Mangrum (2-3) took the loss despite recording six saves on the night.
Offensively, GWU was led by Hooe (two goals, one assist), James (goal), Arey (assist, shot on goal), and Kelly (assist). Substitutes Ele Margelos (North Potomac, Md.) and Samantha Gutierrez (Austin, Texas) were effective off the bench for Kevin Mounce's squad, as each registered two shots on goal for the match.
Chattanooga was led offensively by Hannah Wyatt, who pressured GWU's defense with two of the team's four shots on goal for the night. Monica Speth and Logan Higgins each recorded a shot on goal for the Mocs.
Play at the 2013 Under Armour Border Classic will resume Sunday afternoon with Chattanooga taking on South Carolina State at 1:00 p.m. GWU and USC Upstate will compete in the final match of the Tournament in a contest scheduled for a 3:00 p.m. start time Sunday at Greene-Harbison Field.
