
McClay Places Fourth as Gardner-Webb Cross Country Competes at 2013 Asheville XC Carnival

Asheville, N.C. - Senior Mike McClay rewrote the GWU record books with a school record in the Men's 6K, and freshman Jenna Ford led the Runnin' Bulldogs with a 13th place finish in the Women's 5K as Gardner-Webb cross country ran at the 2013 Asheville XC Carnival Saturday morning.
Ford (Wasilla, Alaska) led the GWU women for the second straight week in achieving her best collegiate finish thus far. She achieved a 13th place showing Saturday morning, closing fast to cross the finish line at 19:29.
Sophomore Claire Cates (Hillsborough, N.C.) raced to a time of 21:22 (42nd), second fastest for GWU on the day. Trailing Cates was senior Katie Spiro (Sylva. N.C.), who timed in at 21:42 (44th) in the women's 5K.
Senior Megan Frost (Crofton, Md.) finished at 25:46, and Kaitlynn Washburn (Shelby, N.C.) competed as Gardner-Webb's fifth runner to round out the scoring for the Runnin' Bulldogs.
GWU's women's cross country team finished in 8th place behind the performances from Ford, Cates, Spiro, Frost, and Washburn.
In the men's 6K, McClay (Lawrenceville, Ga.) paced the Runnin' Bulldogs with his highest finish of the year, placing fourth with a school record time of 19:07.
Fellow senior Justin Loy (Burrington, N.H.) posted GWU's second fastest time on the day, racing to cross the finish line at 21:18. Freshman James Haynes followed with a time of 21:39 for the Runnin' Buldogs.
Seniors Trey Crook (Lexington, N.C.) and Drew Ford (Wasilla, Alaska) rounded out Gardner-Webb's top five in the men's 6K as the pair finished at 21:42 and 21:43 respectively.
GWU's men's cross country team achieved a 7th place finish behind the performances from McClay, Loy, Haynes, Crook, and Ford.
Gardner-Webb cross country next weekend at the Winthrop 8K/5K in Rock Hill, S.C. The September 21 meet is scheduled for a 9:00 a.m. start time.
