CHICAGO
- Gardner-Webb outside linebacker Chad
Geter was named one of five National FCS All-Stars Monday by
College Sporting News following a strong performance in the win
over No. 11 Richmond.
Geter
(Irmo, S.C. / Dutch Fork HS) was part of a quintet that includes
quarterbacks Jimmy Garoppolo (Eastern Illinois) and Jordan Johnson
(Montana), safety Josh Kimberlin (Samford) and kicker Michael
Marando (Fordham).
Geter
was a catalyst in Gardner-Webb's strong defensive showing against
the Spiders, which helped the 'Dogs to a 12-10 win in Spangler
Stadium. The 6-foot-2, 233-pound sophomore totaled a career-best 10
tackles, 1.5 tackles for loss and a sack to help Gardner-Webb limit
Richmond to just 10 net rushing yards on 20 attempts. The defensive
effort also held Richmond to just 4-of-13 on third down (30.7
percent) and 0-for-2 on fourth down.
Geter
saved his best for late in the game, recording eight of his hits in
the second half and five in the fourth quarter. His sack of Michael
Strauss midway through the fourth quarter was a pivotal moment in
the game. Gardner-Webb was clinging to a 9-3 lead with 8:32 to
play, when Geter crashed through to sack Strauss on a 4th-and-4
play from the Gardner-Webb 19-yard line - giving GWU the ball back
at its own 30 after the lost yardage.
The
10 yards allowed rushing on Saturday marked the lowest total
against a scholarship Division I foe since Gardner-Webb moved to
the FCS in 2000. The previous low totals came against Charleston
Southern in 2004 (14 yards) and Florida Atlantic (18 yards) in
2001.
The
clutch performance was the second of the season for Geter, who
totaled eight hits and picked off the game-clinching pass in the
season opener against Furman. The former All-State linebacker at
Dutch Fork (S.C.) High is in his first season as a starter for the
Runnin' Bulldogs.
Gardner-Webb
(2-1, 0-0 Big South) will face its stiffest test of the season on
Saturday, traveling to play No. 8 / 10 Wofford (2-1, 2-0 SoCon) at
7:00 pm in Spartanburg, S.C. The game will air live on WGWG-FM
(88.3 / wgwg.org), with Fabian Fuentes and Ben Fuller calling the
action from Gibbs Stadium.
