Week Four Notes: GWU Men's Soccer Looks to Extend Winning Streak at Mercer on Wednesday Night

Boiling Springs, N.C. - The Gardner-Webb men's soccer team will look to push its current winning streak to two in a row this Wednesday night, as the Runnin' Bulldogs will take on the Mercer Bears at 7 p.m. in non-conference action in Macon, Ga.

Gardner-Webb improved to 3-2-0 on the year with its 1-0 win over Liberty last Saturday afternoon at Greene-Harbison Field. With the 1-0 win over Liberty in its Big South Conference opener, GWU is off to a 1-0-0 conference start for the first time since 2009.

Gardner-Webb's 1-0 win over Liberty was also the second shutout for freshman goalkeeper Matthew Swan and the GWU defense on the season, both of which have come at home at Greene-Harbison Field.

GWU is 2-0-0 at home so far this season, but only 0-2-0 in true road contests, which will need to change as the Runnin' Bulldogs' next three matches will all come on the road with contests at Mercer, at Furman and at Coastal Carolina.

Gardner-Webb has nine goals on the season, a much different number than last year's total of 13 for the entire season.

The Mercer Bears are 1-4 on the season and are coming off a 1-0 win over Georgia Southern on Sunday at the Mercer Tournament.

Mercer and the Runnin' Bulldogs have played two common foes so far this season in Clemson and Georgia Southern with Mercer going 1-1 and GWU going 0-2.

The Bears are 0-1 versus the Big South this season with a 2-1 loss to Winthrop last Friday night at the Mercer Tournament.

Mercer's Ehjayson Henry has four of the Bears' five goals on the season with James Walters posting the other goal.

Since leaving the Atlantic Sun in 2008, the Runnin' Bulldogs are 5-6-1 versus their former conference foes on the pitch. However, GWU has won each of its last two matches versus its former Atlantic Sun Conference foes with both wins coming over USC Upstate (2013 & 2010).

Although GWU is only 3-6 versus the Bears all-time on the pitch, the Runnin' Bulldogs have won each of the last three meetings between these two teams dating back to 2006.

Live stats for Wednesday night's home contest versus Mercer at 7 p.m. will be available at www.mercerbears.com, while the match will also be video streamed live for free over the A-Sun IPTV network on the Internet.
