
McClay Records Top 15 Finish to lead GWU at Winthrop Cross Country Invitational on Saturday

Rock Hill, S.C. - Senior Mike McClay finished in 11th place in the season's first 8K run for Gardner-Webb's men's cross country team, and the GWU women were led by freshman Jenna Ford for the third straight meet as the Runnin' Bulldogs competed at the Winthrop/Adidas Cross Country Invitational on Saturday.
Freshman Jenna Ford led the Runnin' Bulldog women on Saturday, finishing the 5K race in 19:47.23. Saturday marks the third team-leading run of the season for the rookie from Wasilla, Alaska.
Second-year Gardner-Webb runner Claire Cates (Hillsborough, N.C.) achieved a personal best time on Saturday, crossing the finish line at 20:42.89 to finish second-fastest for the Runnin' Bulldogs in the women's 5K. Katie Spiro (Sylva, N.C.) raced to a 5K time of 21:03.02 on Saturday, a season best for the senior.
Megan Frost (23:49.96), Kaycee Martin (23:56.80), and Taylor Cook (24:14.48) also competed for the Runnin' Bulldogs during Saturday's 5K run at Winthrop. Frost's time marked a season best, while Martin and Cook ran in their first races of the 2013 season.
McClay (Lawrenceville, Ga.) earned an 11th place finish in the men's 8K, leading GWU's men's cross country squad with a time of 26:39.40.
Fellow senior Drew Ford (Wasilla, Alaska) was next for GWU, racing to a personal best time 8K time of 29:30.80. Trey Crook (Lexington, N.C.) trailed Ford, finishing at 29:50.90 in the men's 8K.
Freshman James Haynes and senior Justin Loy rounded out GWU's top five, finishing with times of 29:57.11 and 30:02.46 respectively.
Gardner-Webb cross country returns to the course on Friday, October 4 for the Western Carolina Invitational (Cullowhee, N.C.) with action starting at 3:00 p.m.
