
Alberch Wins Flight 2 Singles Crown to Lead Runnin' Bulldogs at 2013 GWU Fall Classic

Boiling Springs, N.C. - Junior Ernest Alberch stepped in to win all thee of his matches at No. 2 singles by tiebreak, and Gardner-Webb's men's team earned at least two wins at six different positions during the 2013 GWU Fall Classic September 20-22.
Along with the Runnin' Bulldogs, Presbyterian, Wofford, and Longwood competed at the tournament held on Gardner-Webb's campus over the weekend.
Alberch (Torello, Spain) earned the flight championship at No. 2 singles by outlasting Presbyterian's Ryan Miller 6-4, 1-6, 10-6 on Sunday. The junior started off the weekend with a singles win over Longwood's Edward Becker, as Alberch outlasted the Lancer's No. 2 player by a 6-4, 6-7, 10-2 margin.
Alberch also scored a resilient 6-2, 0-6, 10-3 win on Saturday, defeating Haris Poric of Wofford.
Sophomore Nikita Zverkov (Moscow, Russia) won Sunday as well, knocking off Gonzalo Asis (PC) by a 6-4, 1-6, 10-8 margin. Zverkov also defeated Longwood's Steed Johnson during his run at No. 3 singles.
Jonathan Walker also won two matches over the weekend. The sophomore from Elkin, N.C. opened singles play with a gritty 7-5, 2-6, 10-7 win over Longwood's Harry Kelleher and also defeated Wofford's Walker Heffron in Flight No. 5, 6-4, 6-2.
In Flight No. 6, freshman Tyler Macy (Elkin, N.C.) captured two singles wins, defeating Wofford's Francis 6-4, 6-2 as well as Longwood's James Fudge 6-3, 6-2.
Junior Brendan Dempsey (Dublin, Ireland) also picked up two singles wins during the Tournament, both in the No. 4 singles flight. The GWU captain won 6-3, 6-4 against Longwood's Mateo Cevallos on Friday and knocked off Wofford's Gotkowski 2-6, 6-3, 10-5 on Saturday.
Nicholas Lofrumento narrowly missed winning the No. 7 singles flight, falling by a narrow margin versus P.H. Broyhill (PC), 2-6, 6-3 (10). The freshman defeated Longwood's Sankar on Friday by a 6-4, 6-2 margin.
Sophomore Benjamin Kaszás (Budapest, Hungary) picked up a win on Sunday versus Presbyterian, defeating Rafael Berghaus 6-3, 6-4 in the final match in the No. 1 singles flight.
The No. 2 doubles combination of Alberch and Walker garnered two wins over the weekend, outlasting Wofford's Heffron/Gotkowski 8-7 (4) and knocking off Longwood's Johnson/Cevallos pairing 8-1.
Gardner-Webb men's tennis will return to action this coming weekend for the Charlotte University Invitational, held September 27-29.
