Boiling Springs, N.C. - Coming off a second-place team finish last week at the Myrtle Beach National Intercollegiate, the Gardner-Webb women's golf team will return to the links on Monday and Tuesday, September 30th and October 1st, to take part in the annual UNCG Starmount Fall Classic hosted by UNC Greensboro in Greensboro, N.C.
The tournament, which will be held at the par 71, 6,265-yards Starmount Forest Country Club in Greensboro N.C., will be the third event of the season for the GWU women's golf team and will host a tournament field of UNC Greensboro, Maryland, Campbell, Gardner-Webb, Western Carolina, Richmond, James Madison, Jacksonville, Elon, High Point, Charleston Southern, Chattanooga, North Florida, Stetson and Wofford.
This fall makes it the fifth straight year in which the Runnin' Bulldogs will participate in this particular fall tournament.
Gardner-Webb will send out the same lineup that posted a second-place team finish last week in Mary Katherine Donovan, Taylor Dodson, Julia Henderson, Sarah Bertram and Pilar Morgan.
Donovan and Dodson, who have finished either one or two for the Runnin' Bulldogs in each of the two previous tournaments this season, will look to lead Gardner-Webb to another top-five team finish this week.
Donovan, who led the Runnin' Bulldogs at the Golfweek Program Challenge with a 32nd-place finish and was second for GWU at the Myrtle Beach National Intercollegiate last week with a ninth-place finish, has carded a low round 73, +1, on the season thus far and has posted a stroke average off 77 over five rounds of play.
The sophomore is the lone current Runnin' Bulldog lady golfer to have played in this event in the past, as she carded rounds of 82, 78 and 79 for a combined score of 239, +26, to finish in a tie at 64th-place in last year's event.
GWU's Dodson, who has headlined a group of four freshmen this season, is coming off a fourth-place finish at the Myrtle Beach National Intercollegiate in which she earned All-Tournament Team honors. The newcomer from Aiken, S.C. has played in both events for GWU so far this fall season, carding a low round 72, even par, and a team-best stroke average of 76.6 on the year.
Both Henderson and Bertram will be competing in their third tournament of the their young careers as Henderson is coming off a top-30 finish last week and has posted a low round 77 on the season, while Bertram is coming off a 14th-place finish at the Myrtle Beach National Intercollegiate with a 36-hole score of 158, +14.
Morgan, the lone upperclassman of the group, will look to carry over her strong play from last week, as she came off a second round 75, +3, to finish in a tie at 11th-place overall at the Myrtle Beach National Intercollegiate.
As a team, GWU finished in 10th-place overall (915) last year at the event and has registered a team-best finish of eighth-place for the annual Starmount Fall Classic Tournament back in 2011.
The two-day event will tee-off with a shotgun start Monday morning, September 30th, at 8:45 a.m. and will include 36 holes on day one. Day two will start with a shotgun start at 9 a.m. on Tuesday morning, October 1st.
