BOILING
SPRINGS - Facilities website StadiumJourney.com ranked
Gardner-Webb's Ernest W. Spangler Stadium 16th in its recent
ranking of 107 FCS Stadiums nationally.
Spangler
Stadium, along with Coach Norman Harris Field, was built in 1966
and benefitted from a tremendous expansion and overall upgrade
prior to the 2004 season. The stadium has been home to several
memorable wins for the Runnin' Bulldogs.
The
9,000-seat facility includes the fabulous Gardner-Webb Football
Center, which houses a state-of-the art weight room, meeting rooms,
a locker room and other team facilities on the first floor and
coaches' offices on the second floor.
The
third floor of the Center is home to a spacious press box and
President's Box, which consistently draws rave reviews from
visitors.
The
stadium, long considered one of the most picturesque locales to
watch a college football game in the Carolinas, drew high marks
from StadiumJourney.com for its atmosphere, food and beverage
offerings, fans and return on investment.
The
site was also highly complimentary of the scenic Boiling Springs,
N.C., campus - which has added several high-quality facilities for
students in the past few years.
Gardner-Webb,
under 1983 graduate Carroll McCray, protected Spangler Stadium very
well in 2013 - forging a 5-1 mark on its home field. The Runnin'
Bulldogs have gone 8-2 over the past 10 games in Spangler Stadium,
dating back to the 2012 season.
This
past season, among its five home wins, Gardner-Webb knocked off a
pair of top-15 teams and another - Furman - that won the Southern
Conference title and finished ranked in the final top-25 in both
major FCS polls.
