SPARTANBURG, S.C. --- Redshirt freshman Austin
Trott (Kingsland, Ga.) has been named the Southern Conference
Wrestler of the Week for all competition from January 15-21, one
day after cracking the InterMat rankings at No. 20 in the 165-pound
weight class.
Trott, wrestling at both 165 and 174 pounds during the week,
posted a 3-0 record and a win over a ranked opponent for the
Runnin' Bulldogs. In his first match of the week, Trott wrestled up
a class at 174 pounds and did not skip a beat, winning a 15-8
decision over Davidson's Nathaniel Powers in Gardner-Webb's 35-15
win on Jan. 15.
The 6-1 Trott returned to 165 pounds on Sunday, topping
American's Cristian Masaya by technical fall, 18-2, before capping
the week with an 8-2 decision against No. 17 Josh Houldsworth of
Columbia. The trio of victories moved Trott into the top 20 in the
InterMat NCAA Division I rankings at 165 pounds, as he improved to
22-3 overall on the season and extending his winning streak to nine
matches.
