GWU's Jones Finishes Eighth, as the Runnin' Bulldogs Finish Sixth at the 2014 Donald Ross Intercollegiate

MORGANTON, N.C. – Gardner-Webb red-shirt sophomore Chris Jones finished tied for eighth-place overall with one other player, as the Gardner-Webb men's golf team finished in sixth-place at the rain shortened 36-hole 2014 Donald Ross Intercollegiate hosted by Appalachian State University at par 70, 6718 yards, Mimosa Hill Country Club in Morganton, N.C.
Overcast clouds and rain falling throughout the day today in Morganton, N.C. washed out the final round of play at the Donald Ross Intercollegiate. Gardner-Webb posted rounds of 283 and 291 to finish the event with a team score of 574, +14, finishing sixth-place overall in the team standings just two strokes behind 5th-place High Point University.
Jones led the Runnin' Bulldogs with rounds of 66 and 73 for a total score of 139, -1 under par, to earn the eighth-place finish. Jones compiled seven birdies over his 36-holes of play for the Runnin' Bulldogs, and started out his first round of play on saturday with an eagle on his opening hole the par 5 seventh hole. The eighth-place finish was the highest finish of Jones collegiate career and Jones' first round score of 66, -4 under par, was lowest round ever recorded by Jones in a collegiate event.
Behind Jones and also posting a top-15 finish was sophomore Vincent Blanchette. Blanchette carded rounds of 72 and 70 with the combined total score of 142, +2, to finish in a tie for 15th-place with one other player. Blanchette like his teammate Jones finished the 36-hole event with seven birdies and Blanchette added an eagle of his own for the tournament on the par 5 14th-hole in his second round of play on Monday afternoon.
Rounding out the scoring for GWU for the event was junior Clement Kurniawan, freshman Jake Kennedy and Senior Matt Yelverton. Kurniawan carded rounds of 73 and 74 to finish with a total score of 147, +7, and in a tie for 32nd-place, while Kennedy and Yelverton finished with 36-hole scores of 148, +8, to both finish tied for 38th-place overall.
Jacksonville took home the team championship with a final score of 554, -6 under par.
Jacksonville also took home the top individual honors as Franck Medale medaled for the Dolphins posting the first-place finish with rounds of 63 and 66 to card the tournament low score of 129, -11 under par.
Gardner-Webb will return to action this weekend as the Runnin' Bulldogs will take part in the 2014 Camden Intercollegiate hosted by the University of South Carolina on October 18-19th at the Camden Country Club in Camden, S.C.
