BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – Shelby Hooe scored her sixth goal of the season and Krista Chauvin recorded her fourth shutout as the Gardner-Webb women's soccer team defeated Radford 2-0 in a Big South Conference women's soccer match on Wednesday evening at Greene-Harbison Stadium.
This was the first victory of the year for the Runnin' Bulldogs at Greene-Harbison Stadium and the first win over Radford since Oct. 17, 2011.
Radford had a slight advantage in the overall shot total, as it outshot the Runnin' Bulldogs 13-12, while GWU had the advantage in shots on goal, 9-6.
Gardner-Webb would take a 1-0 lead in the second minute, as Brandi Arey gave a great pass to Hooe, who hit the cross bar, but managed to pick up the rebound and fire it into the net.
Radford outshot Gardner-Webb 9-6 in the opening half, but could not manage a shot by Chauvin, as the Highlanders would go into the halftime break trailing by one.
The second period featured chances by both teams, but neither would find the back of the net, until the 65th minute when Arey attempted a shot on net, which deflected off a Highlander defender right to Haley Ahrenholtz, who put it into the open frame for her first goal in a GWU uniform, as the Runnin' Bulldogs would go on for the 2-0 victory.
Gardner-Webb returns to the pitch for its next match on Saturday afternoon when it hosts conference leading Liberty with kickoff set for 4:00 p.m.
