Runnin' Bulldogs Men's Tennis Picks Up Three Wins at ITA Regional Event

CARY, N.C. – The Gardner-Webb men's tennis team competed at the yearly ITA Regional tournament showcasing the wealth of collegiate tennis talent in the Carolinas. The Runnin' Bulldogs traveled Nikita Zverkov, Benjamin Kaszas and Ernest Alberch to compete at the event over October 16-17th at the Cary Tennis Complex in Cary, N.C.
Gardner-Webb totaled three wins at the tournament, picking up two singles wins and a doubles win at the tournament.
Zverkov playing in his junior year for the Runnin' Bullogs picked a big win in the consolation bracket defeating Wake Forest's Nicolas Osterling in a hard fought three set match (7-5, 4-6, 6-3). Zverkov dropped his opening match, (6-2, 6-2), to Jason Tahir of Duke the fourth seeded player overall at the tournament.
Kaszas also fell in his opening match of the tournament, losing a (6-4, 7-5) match to Zach Bost from Appalachian State. Kaszas rebounded though to win his consolation match winning confidently (6-2, 6-3) over Michael Chen from Winthrop University.
Alberch & Zverkov were the doubles team that competed for the Runnin' Bulldogs at the event. The two earned a first round win defeating the team of Charlie Ghriskey/Vasily Kichgin from the College of Charleston 8-2. They then lost a tough match to the 9-16th seeded team of Austin Ansari/Luke Johnson from Clemson in a tight 8-6 match.
The Gardner-Webb men's tennis team will return to action next at the 2014 Winthrop Fall Invitational hosted from October 31st through November 2nd on the campus of Winthrop University in Rock Hill, S.C.
