CHICAGO, Ill. – Gardner-Webb kicker Paul Schumacher was selected a national FCS Weekly All-Star by College Sporting News following a strong effort this past weekend.
Schumacher (West Palm Beach, Fla. / The King's Academy) scored a career-best 11 points in Gardner-Webb's 47-41 win in two overtimes, including a clutch field goal that sent the game into overtime in the closing seconds of regulation.
With the Runnin' Bulldogs trailing 34-31, Schumacher stepped up and split the uprights with room to spare on a 43-yard field goal with seven seconds remaining. It was the longest field goal of his seven-game career, and was his second game-tying kick in the closing seconds of a half this season.
Schumacher also made a 35-yarder at the halftime horn vs. Charlotte on October 4, tying that game at 17.
Against VMI, the 5-foot-10, 170-pounder made all five of his PAT kicks and added a 26-yard field goal midway through the third quarter that pushed Gardner-Webb's lead to 31-13.
Schumacher is tied for the Big South lead this season with eight made field goals. He was also named Big South Conference Crons Brand Special Teams Player of the Week on Monday.
Gardner-Webb (4-3) opens Big South Conference play on Saturday, October 25, at Liberty. Kickoff is set for 3:30 pm (ESPN3).
