BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – The Gardner-Webb University women's soccer team (7-8-2) used a balanced attack scoring six goals from five different players in a 6-1 victory over Brevard College (3-12-0) in a women's soccer match on Thursday evening at Greene-Harbison Stadium.
Jessica Ferguson was the centerpiece of the Runnin' Bulldog attack much of the evening, as she scored two goals and added two assists for a career-high six points. This was the second two-goal game for Ferguson this season, as she netted two goals in the 7-2 victory over Chattanooga on Aug. 31.
Amy Schmitt got the start in net for GWU and recorded two saves in the game for her eighth career victory.
Gardner-Webb put continued pressure on the Brevard defense as it managed 24 shots and 10 shots on goal.
Tori James gave the Runnin' Bulldogs a 1-0 lead in the 11th minute with her fourth goal of the season. Ferguson fired a rocket towards the goal, which hit the post and came right back to James who shot it in the goal.
Just four minutes later, Ferguson extended the GWU to 2-0, as she was on the receiving end from a great pass from Emily Burton, and blasted a shot past the keeper.
Brevard cut the GWU lead to one in the 29th minute, as Hunter Denney scored off a pass from Althea Dunn.
The Runnin' Bulldogs would answer the Brevard goal just over a minute later, as Kim Stout scored her first-career goal. Annie Ross added a fourth goal for GWU, as it would take a 4-1 lead into the halftime intermission.
Gardner-Webb continued its offensive pressure in the second half, as Ferguson scored off a pass from Burton to extend the GWU lead to 5-1.
The Runnin' Bulldogs sixth goal of the caused a cheer from their bench, as Burton netted the first goal of her career and Gardner-Webb would go on for the 6-1 victory.
Gardner-Webb plays its regular-season home finale on Saturday as it hosts Charleston Southern at 7:00 p.m. for senior night. Prior to the start of the game, GWU's five seniors will be recognized along with their respective families.
