RALEIGH, N.C. --- North Carolina State scored four times in the second half to erase a 2-1 halftime deficit and rally for a 5-2 victory over Gardner-Webb in non-conference play on Tuesday evening, as Ali Al-Gashamy (Kristiansand, Norway) scored for the third time in as many matches.
North Carolina State (5-4-2) outshot Gardner-Webb (1-7-1) by a 22-8 margin on the night, including a 12-2 advantage in the second half, while holding a 5-4 edge in corners when the final whistle blew.
Al-Gashamy paced the Runnin' Bulldog attack with one goal and one assist, finding the back of the net for the third straight match, as Sami Jilla (Charlotte, N.C.) scored his first collegiate goal to give Gardner-Webb a 2-1 lead midway through the first half. Matthew Swan (Newport, South Wales, United Kingdom) made seven saves in the contest, while Filipe Conceicao (Sao Paulo, Brazil) was also credited with an assist.
Yanni Hachem led the way for North Carolina State with two goals and one assist, while Nick Surkamp, Reed Norton and Roland Minogue each found the back of the net as well. Caleb Duvernay, Michael Bajza, Travis Wannemuelher, Holden Fender and Phillip Carmon were all credited with an assist in the contest, as Alex McCauley made a pair of saves.
Jilla opened the scoring for Gardner-Webb late in the 15th minute, when Al-Gashamy and Conceicao combined to set up the sophomore midfielder with a centering pass, freeing Jilla for the finish from 25 yards out to put the Runnin' Bulldogs up 1-0.
North Carolina State equalized just 19 seconds later, surging forward off the restart and leveling the match at 1-1 through Surkamp after Wannemuelher found him with a cross from the right flank. Gardner-Webb would answer again in the 21st minute, reclaiming the upper hand at 2-1 when Al-Gashamy pounced on a mistake by the backline and slotted home the easy open net finish from the top of the box.
The Wolfpack nearly drew even several times over the remaining 25 minutes of the first half, ringing the bar in the 26th minute and forcing a trio of Swan saves as Gardner-Webb carried a narrow 2-1 advantage into the interval.
North Carolina State would find the equalizer late on in the 49th minute, leveling the match at 2-2 when Hachem scored his first of two off a centering pass from Bajza. Hachem doubled his account midway through the 72nd minute, giving North Carolina State its first lead of the night at 3-2 when his finish struck just inside of the left post.
The Wolfpack doubled the margin to 4-2 in the 76th, when Duvernay and Hachem linked up to put Norton in position for the right-sided finish from close range. Minogue capped the scoring five minutes later, finishing off the right post following a combined buildup from Carmon and Fender.
Gardner-Webb returns to the pitch on Saturday, resuming its Big South Conference schedule with a 1:00 pm matchup against Liberty at Greene-Harbison Field.
