BUIES CREEK, N.C.- Alexis Prada's goal in the 104th minute lifted Campbell University to a 1-0 victory over the Gardner-Webb women's soccer team in a Big South Tournament Quarterfinal match on Sunday afternoon.
The Fighting Camels will advance to the semifinals where they will face the #1 seed Liberty, who defeated Radford 2-0.
Second-Team All Big South Conference selection Krista Chauvin was superb in net for the Runnin' Bulldogs, as she recorded 11 saves in the defeat. This was the third game this season that Chauvin has recorded double-digit saves for GWU.
Offensively, the Runnin' Bulldogs had a tough time mustering up an attack, as they were only able to managed four shots, three of which came from Jessica Casper.
A strong wind was present throughout today's match, and despite the windy conditions, Campbell was able manage 24 shots and six corner kicks, but it was unable to get a shot past Chauvin, as the game remained scoreless after 90 minutes.
The Fighting Camels continued to keep the ball in the Gardner-Webb side of the field during the extra periods, and it finally paid off as Alexis Prada scored in the 104th minute on a curling shot into the far right hand side of the net, to give Campbell the 1-0 victory and advance to next weekend's Big South Tournament semifinal matchup.
Head Coach Mike Varga had these comments after the tough loss, " We fought hard today. I thought we did a good job of defending. Campbell is a well coached team and I wish them success next weekend. I told our seniors that they will be missed. They helped set the tone for this season with their dedication to the team. We didn't achieve all our goals this season, but we are headed in the right direction and the girls should be proud of the season we had".
Gardner-Webb ended the season with two hearbreaking losses, as it lost its last two games, both in double-overtime.
The eight wins for GWU are the most in a single season since 2009, when it had 12.
