Second Half Comeback Propels Women's Basketball To Victory

SPARTANBURG, S.C.- Candace Brown and Jessica Heilig each scored a game-high 20 points and Heilig hauled down 10 rebounds for her first double-double of the season, as the Gardner-Webb women's basketball team erased eight point halftime deficit to defeat Wofford College (1-4), 65-60 on Saturday afternoon. 

The victory for the Runnin' Bulldogs evens its record to 3-3 on the season and is the first victory for GWU when it trailed at halftime. 

Heilig was clutch from the foul-line for a second straight game, hitting 10-12 from the charity stripe, and as a team Gardner-Webb went 22-32 (68.8%) from the free-throw line on the afternoon. 

Despite not having its best game of the soon shooting the ball, hitting only 32.2% of its field goals, Gardner-Webb capitalized on Wofford's turnovers, scoring 15 points off of 15 turnovers by the Terriers, and outscoring Wofford by a 20-12 margin on second chance points. 

The Runnin' Bulldogs got 17 points from its bench and pounded the ball inside to their post players all game long scoring 22 of its 65 points in the paint. 

Midway through the first half, Lauren Kirby hit 1-2 free-throws to cut the GWU lead to 13-12. Christina McQueen scored a layup with 10:20 left in the opening half to give Gardner-Webb its largest lead of the first half, 20-14. 

Similiar to the Appalchian State game, but this time in the first half, Wofford would go over a 23-9 run over the remaining 10:20 of the first half to take a 37-29 lead into the locker room at the halftime break. 

The Runnin' Bulldogs contined to trail in the second half, as Wofford extended its lead to as much as 15 points (53-38) with 10:48 left in the game. 

After a Mayhana Dunovant three-pointer to cut the Wofford lead to 53-41, head Coach Rick Reeves called a timeout, and Gardner-Webb responded with 10-0 to cut the defecit to just two (53-51) with 5:48 remaining. 

Brown hit a three-pointer to tie the game at 56 with 3:37, which was the first tie of the game since the 7:49 mark of the first half. A Heilig layup with 1:56 remaining gave the Runnin' Bulldogs their first lead (57-56) since 7:18 mark of the first half when they led 22-21. 

Gardner-Webb was clutch down the stretch hitting six of its seven free-throws as it was go on for the 65-60 victory, for its first road victory of the season. 

The Runnin' Bulldogs return to action on Tuesday when they open up conference play at Presbyterian. Tipoff for Tuesday's matchup between Gardner-Webb and Presbyterian is set for 7:00 p.m.
