KIAWAH ISALAND, S.C. – Gardner-Webb senior Matt Yelverton posted a top-25 finish, as GWU finished in 13th overall at 2014 Wendy's Kiawah Classic hosted by Charleston-Southern University at the par 72, 7100 yards, Jack Nicklaus Signature Turtle Point Golf Course in Kiawah Island, S.C.
Gardner-Webb carded rounds of 302, 299 and 294 to finish with a three-round combined team score of 895, +31 finishing in 13th-place overall out of 20 teams participating in the three-day event.
Yelverton led the Runnin' Bulldogs with rounds of 74 in each of his three rounds to finish with 54-hole score of 222, +6, placing him in a tie for 23rd-place overall with five other players. Yelverton turned in five birdies for GWU over the three-day event and in his final round of play on Tuesday he scored an eagled the par 5 13th.
Finishing behind Yelverton was freshman Jake Kennedy who after a tough first round of 82 shot solid rounds of 74 and 70 to finish in a tie for 47th-place with a total score of 226, +10. Kennedy's final round of 70 was the only round under-par for the Runnin' Bulldogs at the event. Kennedy compiled eight birdies over the 54-hole tournament, five of which came in his final round of play on Tuesday.
Coming in just two shots behind Kennedy was sophomore Vincent Blanchette who carded rounds of 73, 79 and 76 to finish with a total combined score of 228, +12, finding himself in a tie for 55th-place. Blanchette led Gardner-Webb with nine birdies over his 54-holes of play.
Rounding out the Gardner-Webb line-up was red-shirt sophomore Chris Jones and Junior Clement Kurniawan. Jones finished in 69th-place overall scoring rounds of 78, 78 & 74 to finish with a total of 228, +14, while Kurniawan shot rounds of 77, 73 and 83 to finish with a three-round total of 223, +17, tying for 77th-place overall.
Winthrop University won the team competition, as the Eagles carded a team low score of 864 even par finishing just four strokes ahead of the second-place finisher Georgia Southern.
USC Upstate's Ryan Cornfield and Georgia Southern's Scott Wolfes were finished in a tie atop the individual leaderboard, as both competitors finished with total scores of 210, -6 under par. Wolfes tied for first by recording a Turtle Point Course record in his final round on Tuesday shooting a brilliant round of 63, -9 under par.
The three-day, 54-hole event was the final tournament of the 2014 fall season for the Runnin' Bulldogs.
