BOILING SPRINGS – Gardner-Webb defense end Tyler Hough-Jenkins was named first-team Capital One Academic All-District III Thursday afternoon.
Hough-Jenkins (Charlotte, N.C. / Olympic HS) compiled a 3.46 cumulative GPA as an undergraduate, majoring in Sports Management. He earned his degree in August, 2014, and is currently enrolled in graduate school at Gardner-Webb.
The 6-foot-4, 274-pounder has transitioned his classroom success onto the field in his first season as a starter. Hough-Jenkins led a strong surge up front at Wake Forest in the second game of the season, racking up a career-high 11 tackles while the GWU defense limited the Demon Deacons to just 96 yards rushing.
Hough-Jenkins has started all nine games for the Runnin' Bulldogs in 2014, ranking fourth on the team with a career-high 46 total tackles (19 solo). He also has posted 5.0 tackles for loss (minus-15 yards) and collected his first sack of the season for an eight-yard loss on November 1 against No. 2 Coastal Carolina.
Hough-Jenkins has batted down two passes – including a key deflection in the win at VMI (10/18) – and has a fumble recovery to his credit.
He is the third Gardner-Webb student-athlete to earn first-team Academic All-District III honors in the past two seasons. Hough-Jenkins is the first Gardner-Webb defensive lineman to be honored.
Gardner-Webb (4-5, 0-2 Big South) travels to face another difficult road test on Saturday, November 8, at Charleston Southern. Kickoff is set for 11:00 am on ESPN3.
