SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Senior Brendan Dempsey went 3-0 in the Terrier Singles draw, wining the draw championship to lead the Gardner-Webb men's tennis team at the 2014 Terrier Fall Invitational.
Dempsey started of his weekend with an opening round win over Wofford's Parks Thompson in a well-played (3-6, 6-1, 6-4) match. He then defeated Alejandro Bejar form Presbyterian in the semi-final match (7-5, 6-2), before defeating Lenoir-Rhyne's Robin Hochguertel in a (6-1, 6-4) straight-set match to claim the Terrier Singles title.
Red-shirt freshman Paul Hogan also played very well at this weekend's invitational going 2-1 in the White Singles draw. Hogan began the invitational with a good comeback (0-6, 6-4, 6-1) match over Wofford's Graham Duncan. Hogan then easily won his semi-final match (6-1, 6-1) over John Christian Reid from Lenoir-Rhyne. In the draws championship Hogan dropped the match (6-2, 1-6, 4-6) to Andrew Graham from Wofford, playing well in the match earning the second-place finish.
Runnin' Bulldog junior Jonathan Walker earned third-place in the White Singles draw going 2-1 as well on his weekend of play at the Invitational. Walker opened the Invitational with a (6-4, 6-3) win over UNC Asheville's Will Goldberg. Walker would then drop his semi-final match to the eventual draw winner Wofford's Andrew Graham (4-6, 6(3)-7), but found a way to come back and win the third-place match (4-6, 6-3, 7-5) over Lenoir-Rhyne's John Christian Reid.
A pair of Gardner-Webb freshman Adam Schmidt and Michael Perry also picked up singles victories this weekend, both earning their wins on Sunday afternoon. Schmidt defeated Alejandro Bejar from Presbyterian (6-4, 7-5) in the Black Singles draw, and Perry defeated Wofford's Patrick Longest (7-5, 6-3) in the College Singles draw.
The GWU men's tennis team concluded its fall season at this weekends Invitational and will look to prepare for its upcoming 2015 spring season. The Runnin' Bulldogs are scheduled to open the spring season at UNC Wilmington on January 19th.
