December 17, 2014 | Wrestling
SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Gardner-Webb redshirt sophomore Austin Trott was honored Wednesday as the Southern Conference's Wrestler of the Week.
Trott (Kingsland, Ga. / Camden County HS) earned the award for the second time in his career – on the strength of perhaps his most dominant weekend to date.
Trott blitzed the field at the 2014 Cleveland State Open to win the 165-pound title, going 5-0 with bonus points scored in all five bouts. He opened with three consecutive wins via major decision, outscoring his opponents 30-3 in those matches – then turned up the heat as he blew through the semifinals and finals.
Trott pinned Ohio's Austin Reese in just 51 seconds in the semifinals and had no trouble with Michigan grappler Garrett Sutton in the championship match – pinning Sutton in just 1:02.
Trott improved to 13-2 on the season with his strong performance and leads Gardner-Webb with five pins so far in 2014-2015. He is ranked No. 19 nationally this week by TheOpenMat.com at 165 pounds.
In two seasons of full competition with the Runnin' Bulldogs, Trott has posted a 42-12 record with 11 pins.
Trott and the Runnin' Bulldogs will return to the mat on January 1-2 at the annual Southern Scuffle Tournament in Chattanooga, Tenn.
The next dual match for Gardner-Webb (3-4, 1-0 SoCon) will come on January 9 at 7:00 pm against Binghamton on the home mat in Paul Porter Arena.
