Late Three-Pointer Lifts Kennesaw State To Victory Over Gardner-Webb

KENNESAW, Ga.-Karly Frey's three-pointer with 10.2 seconds left lifted Kennesaw State to a 50-47 victory over the Gardner-Webb women's basketball team in the final non-conference game of the season on Saturday afternoon at the KSU Convocation Center.

Olivia Parker scored 11 points and grabbed 11 rebounds for her fifth double-double and the 10th of her career, while Christina McQueen added 11 points to pace the Gardner-Webb offense.

Deandrea Sawyers scored a game-high 18 points to pace an Owl attack that featured three players scoring in double-figures, while Jasmine McAllister was a beast on the boards hauling down a game-high 16 rebounds.

Kennesaw State was able to limit the Runnin' Bulldogs transition game, as the Owls outscored GWU on the fastbreak 12-0, but Gardner-Webb got production from its bench scoring 13 points from its reserves compared to just four for KSU.

Trailing by one with 22 seconds left, Brown drove the lane and got fouled and made both free-throws to give the Runnin' Bulldogs a 47-46 lead.

On the ensuing possession, Kennesaw State got the ball into Breanna Mosely who kicked the pass out to Frye, who scored the game-winning three-pointer for her only field goal of the game to give the Owls a 49-47 lead with 10 seconds remaining.

Gardner-Webb drew up a play for Brown, who drove the lane once again and put up a shot that hit the front of the rim, but stayed out of the hoop, and Kristina Wells grabbed the missed shot and got fouled for KSU, sending her to the line for two free throws with just one second remaining.

Wells would go on to make 1-2 free throws and the halfcourt heave by the Runnin' Bulldogs was no good, as Kennesaw State would take the game 50-47.

The Runnin' Bulldogs started the game off with a quick 8-2 burst over the first five minutes of the contest, as Dunovant and Parker each connected on shots from behind the arc.

Gardner-Webb continued to hold the lead midway through the first half, 12-8, before Kennesaw State held the Runnin' Bulldogs scoreless for the next three minutes, as the Owls went on a 5-0 run to take their first lead of the game 13-12.

Dunovant ended the scoring drought for GWU connecting on her second three-pointer of the first half to give the lead back to the Runnin' Bulldogs, 15-13 with 7:03 remaining.

Williams scored two straight layups, as the Runnin' Bulldogs took a four-point lead, 23-19 before KSU scored the last four points of the first half to tie the game at 23 going into the halftime intermission.

Gardner-Webb continued to hold a four point lead until the 16:43 mark when Aeron Smith connected on a jumper to tie the game at 29.

Kennesaw State would clamp down on defense and hold GWU without a field goal for the next four minutes. KSU scored the next four points to take a 33-29 lead, before Parker hit 1-2 free throws to end the field goal drought for GWU to cut the deficit to three with 12:36 to go in the game.

The Owls held the lead for the next six minutes until McQueen scored a layup to give the lead back to the Runnin' Bulldogs 41-40 with 6:03 to go.

Both teams would continue to trade baskets for the remaining six minutes, as neither team would lead by more than one point, until Frye scored her first basket of the game to lift Kennesaw State to the 50-47 victory.

Gardner-Webb takes a ten-day rest before it returns to action on Dec. 30 when it hosts Radford for its conference opener at 7:00 p.m. in Paul Porter Arena.
